    1. Some of Japantown's restaurants

        1. 71 St. Peter, at 71 N. San Pedro.

            1. Vung Tau-E Santa Calrsa and Ninth--the best of Vietnamese cuisine
              New Asian Garden--E Santa Clara & 7th
              fabulous Bun
Muchos--E Santa Clara and 2nd--great roasted chicken and burritos
New Tung Kee Noodle--great duck curry soup

                1. La Pastaia in the Hotel De Anza (233 W. Santa Clara) a pretty Italian place with good food. There's a Sicilian style--Palermo--at 394 S. 2nd--which is fun in a kind of East Coast over the top Italian way.

Inca Gardens at 87 E. San Fernando is good and reasonable Peruvian food.

On locations--Japantown has a number of good places, but it's probably a good 15+ minute walk from the core of Downtown. It's a quick ride on the light rail or drive, however.

The San Jose Mercury is far more chowish in its tastes than the Chronicle (and is available throughout the Bay Area). Pick up the Friday paper which has "Eye"--the entertainment section, including their restaurant recommendations.

                    1. Thank you all! No more tedious hotel fare.
