I'm going tonight for my birthday. I'm debating between the lobster roll (haven't had a good one since Black Pearl) or the shrimp and scallop pasta. Any suggestions?

I thought their lobster roll was a mediocre attempt at the classic dish.

That dish should be put in the category of "Overrated" as mentioned a few posts below.

Haven't had the lobster roll because I dislike mayo. However, I have had the pasta and it's tasty indeed. In general, I'm a fan of Mermaid Inn.

The lobster roll at Mermaid Inn doesn't have mayo, which is why its a good alternative to a traditional lobster roll (in my opinion).

I don't understand why people say it has too much mayo, if you are saying it doesn't have any mayo at all. Very curious.

Let's diffuse the bomb--or chuck another one instead. Lobster roll is NOT a classic dish. Really. Any hand-held food item that you can be easily and better made at home, requiring not much cooking skill beyond a little attention, can neither be called classic nor a dish. Let's see...hot dog, hamburger, yeah, lobster roll. Of course the lobster roll is overpriced even in Maine. And the natives laugh.

As for the Mermaid Inn, I had a non-descript meal there once in a large group setting, which is not the best way to judge a place. Can't remember much. Nothing special, is all.

Wow, what a coincidence. I was just there for dinner last night. I had the whole dorade and it was absolutely spectacular. The waiter fileted it right in from of me (a little weird but cool) and there were hardly any bones. One of the best fish I've eaten, reminded me of eating seafood in the summer by the sea. My SO had the salmon and the little bit he let me try before he cleaned his plate was excellent. I've heard some negative reviews, but service and food were both great and I have no complaints.
