Would LOVE to hear a concensus from well-known posters on there being an actual great place for burritos in Manhattan!!! Surely will be some shills for random places, but truly very good Mexican places do not seem to exist here -- really miss So Cal!! And it's not like it's rocket science to make a good burrito.... and food cost is cheap, prep time minimal.... and so many of us are eager for a great one!!

I'm fond of Uncle Moe's near Union Square, 19th St btw 5th and 6th Aves. Dunno how they do it, but they're consitently good, particularly for deliveries. Not as great as Kitchen Market in Chelsea, however....

I also (sadly) second Uncle Moe's. What I would LOVE to find is a carne asada burrito - just seasoned meat, cilantro, onions and fresh guacamole. On a fresh tortilla. No rice - doesn't belong in burritos. Sigh. I think Kitchen Market is... well, almost as bad as Burritoville (don't go!)

If you want "healthy" (i.e. black beans, whole wheat tortilla), I like Cosmic Cantina.

I had a vendor taco at a street fair from a place called Javier's in the Bronx. Still been meaning to take a trip up, best taco i've had in the city.

I like Uncle Moe's too. I thought you could ask them whatever you want (don't want) in your burrito. My only gripe is they close early esp. on weekends.

The closest I've found to a proper California Mission-style burrito (and I really haven't looked very hard) is the McDonald's-owned Mexican chain Chipotle (several Manhattan locations).

While they are a National chain, they really are very good. They use Niman Ranch pork, mostly organic veggies, and hand-mash their gaucomole from whole avocados daily. I'm hoping someone comes up with a better option, but for inexpensive and consistenly very good burritos, you really shouldn't discount Chipotle.

Myself and several friends find Chipotle's guac to be way too heavy. In fact if I have one of their burritos with gucamole I feel like I have a 10 lbs. brick sitting in my stomach.

I've been able to avoid this by going with the burrito bowl over lettuce instead of rice; but I still can't say it's good - sadly nothing compares to the El Diablo in San Diego.

Nor is it a place to get burritos, which are just awful at taqueria y fonda. Too much lettuce, gummy cheese, nothing but refried beans. Terrible...

If you can't stand Chipotle (which is the best imo--sorry) then try Kitchen Market on 8th Ave btw 21st and 22nd. At least they do burritos with whole beans that you can eat with your hands.

I've said this here b4. So here I go again. My fav place for burritos (and margeritas) is Baby Bo's on 2nd ave btween 34th and 35th. Hands down, mine, my wife's and many of our friends, go to place, for burritos and the like.

As a matter of fact, think I'm gonna suggest we go Friday nite.

Im no burrito expert, but i like (as do my friends who fancy themselves burrito eaters) burrito box on 9th bet 57th & 58th.

Their ingredients are fresh and the burrito stays together til' the very end.

Much as it pains me, I have to agree with sourpatch. When I was back in the Bay Area recently, I'd never even consider hitting a chipotle. Here in NYC, however, they are by far the best.

We're still really more a taco and torta town. My favorite place in manhattan for this is Tulcingo Del Valle on 10th Ave btw 47th and 46th. Try the torta al pastor (they do it on a spit!) with fresh avocado instead of guacamole.
