hi sf chowhounds

back to this board after a long absence. i'm visiting SF from new york this coming wknd (2/14 - 2/17) and am interested in trying one of the new bistros that have opened in town on Sunday night.

i've heard great things about chez spencer but they are not open on sundays. between chez papa and le petit robert, which one should i go with? (i know there've been posts about all these places but it's hard to choose when they all sound good )are there any other must-trys?

thanks in advance!

There was a post on this board on Feb. 5 saying that Jeanty@Jacks is closing for a week or so for renovations. They are scheduled to reopen Feb. 13, but you should check before heading over there.

I like them both but must say Chez Papa is one of my favorites in the city. Lots of variety on the menu, and even the small plates are fairly substantial. Nearly every dish I've had there has been very very good, from scallops with pistou and beans to a crunchy green bean salad with goat cheese and prosciutto to lavendar-salt crusted lamb. Mmm. Want to go there right now.

It's kind of a fun, hipster place but gets quite loud--be prepared. Nice wine list and desserts too.

Between those two, I would go with Chez Papa.
If you are driving, the parking is much easier.
Both are relatively small restaurants (although Chez Papa is smaller than Le Petit Robert) that get very noisy late at night, but despite the noise CP seemed more warm and intimate (this is based on weekend dinners).
Prices are comparable.
The selection of small dishes (salads, eggplant terrine, moules et frites, scallops with white beans, etc.) and wine was more appealing at Chez Papa.
Note, reservations are a must.
