Crumbs Bake Shop at 321 Amsterdam Avenue has impressive cupcakes that are HUGE and a good value for the quality. The "fancy" cupcakes are a little disappointing, but the simple cupcakes with assorted buttercreams are delicious. The vanilla cake with raspberry butter cream is my personal favorite. I am a pastry cook and worked making cakes for 4 years, and so far these are the best cupcakes I've found in Manhattan.

Casa Cupcake or Cupcake Café in Hell's Kitchen - though I never remember which one has the baked goods and which just serves coffee.

It's the same place now. Cupcake Cafe closed and moved into the Casa space.

A million of these exist in Manhattan. I've tried and liked Mary's Off Jane and Billy's Bakery.
Amy's gets good reviews, but I haven't been.

Mary's Off Jane closed some time ago. Amy's cakes are delicious but I don't know how expensive they are.
