I had a phenomenal Banh-Mi yesterday at Saigon Banh-Mi (on Mott just south of Grand). I thought it was quite a bit better than what I've had at Banh-Mi So 1 (369 Broome).

The bread at Saigon was incredibly crisp without being tough, and the vegetables were fresh and tasty.

Honestly, the Saigon Banh-Mi (ordered "hot") might be one of the top 3 best sandwiches in the city.

I can't agree more- what a deelish sandwich. And for $3.25 a bargain.

I put it up there with the BLT @ Penelopes, Melampo fare, BB sandwich bar (is this place still around?,) etc... with the tastiest sandwiches in this city. (Fiore's in Hoboken makes a killer italian sub!)
EAT has some nice sandwiches uptown for abouu $20 each- tasty but not as good as a whole week of Bahn Mi's!

I wish I worked in chinatown!

I've done my typical research. Compared Saigon Banh Mi to No. 1 on Broome to Nicky's then just to be sure tried the three banh mi places on Larkin Street in San Francisco. Let me assure you that Saigon Banh Mi, which has thankfully moved to Mott, is by far the greatest. As far as Italian heros I've done the same and like Italian American Kitchen around the corner and Parisi. Haven't been to Melampo since it changed owners, Faicco's is great as is Leo's (aka Mama's in Queens). I won't go into my search throughout the city (and Miami) for cubanos here or Cheesesteaks here (and in Philly). But the current reigning sandwich of all is........ Roast Pork Italian at Tony Lukes (41st street and 9th ave). Coming to the village hopefully by xmas.

I recommend the Banh-Mi at Sau Voi Corporation, on Lafayette Street, a block or so south of Canal. Great bread. Great ingredients. Tiny hole in the wall place.

This place is actually disapointing IMO. The bread is heavy and chewy, the fillings skimpy. I say head to saigon on mott street or nickys on EV.

Enjoy your sammiches, but be forewarned: They're addictive. Know how the average person is sonething like 80% water? Not me, not anymore. I'm 17% Banh Mi. Not as much as 80% I know, but still- Noone has ever been as much Banh Mi as I. Call Guiness! Call an ambulance! Call in advance at Saigon Banh Mi cuz they run out early!
