I really liked the chicken salad at Yan Can in Milpitas Mall. It's near the Black Angus restaurant. Opposite of Ross for Less. The place seems small and the menu is limited and a bit confusing. You order, pay, get your own silverware and drinks, then sit down. The food comes pretty fast.

There are now three or four in the Yan Can chain - I have eaten several times at the one in El Cerrito (the first time on opening night when Martin Yan was there and it was a fundraiser for El Cerrito High School - good community relations). The food is not bad for fast food - good sized portions, freshly cooked, and very inexpensive. Does Yan live in the Bay Area?

For the Milpitas opening there was a fund raiser for Milpitas High School and Martin was there also.

Martin home is in the Bay Area, but I have heard that he always on the road during his tapings, tours and opening more places in this chain. He had a cooking school in Foster City and I think his offices are in Burlingame.

We went to the one in Santa Clara. The menu got us excited and the surroundings were pleasant, however the staff was very juvenile and the service was very poor. After waiting 15 minutes and not even getting water we left.

I've been to the Yan Cans in El Cerrito and Pleasant Hill. The first time we went to one (the first week they opened) one of the workers mentioned that some of the fortune cookies have fortunes that say that you've won a free appetizer. Because the fortune cookies are available in a huge bowl - open for people to grab - my boyfriend polishes up to 10 per visit. We thought this free appetizer thing was a myth though because of all the fortune cookies we've eaten since October, but then last week my boyfriend found the coveted free appetizer fortune. Hurrah!

I haven't tried the chicken salad yet but I can vouch for:

-crispy chicken potstickers
-minced chicken lettuce tacos
-spicy Hunan chicken (not spicy)
-Kung Pao chicken (good but doesn't taste like traditional Kung Pao)
-Korean BBQ beef
-spring rolls

not so good:
-Singapore (smells like Thai, and tastes okay... sort of disturbing because it doesn't taste quite right though)
-carrot fried rice (eh - just okay)

Overall, I would say that it's not as good as the Pick Up Stix chain in Southern California though.
