I am looking for a vegetarian/vegi-friendly eatery in Manhattan. I heard about these 2 places and their high prices. Does anyone have an opinion who has been there, preferrably to both or any other alternatives to recommend?

I haven't been to Mana in a while, but I've been there many times in the past. The food is very healthy and I haven't found it outrageously expensive. I haven't been to Candle Cafe but I have been to Candle 79, which is the fancier one of the two. It's quite expensive, but a good option for an upscale vegan night out. Their seitan piccata was really good (I've had it both times I was there), as were several of the appetizers and salads. Lots of $, though. I've seen Candle Cafe, which is more casual and the menu looks less interesting to me, although it's more affordable.

Other options are Ozu on the UWS (very healthy vegetarian) and Ayerveda, which is vegetarian Indian and is really inexpensive. Ayerveda does one dinner (or lunch) daily, which one gets rather than ordering off of a menu. One gets an appetizer, two vegetable entrees, rice, bread, a lentil or bean dish and a dessert. Very reasonably priced.

Other options are the vegetarian Indian places on Lexington, around 28th or so. There are plenty of them there, and most are pretty reasonably priced. My personal favorite is Madras Mahal. Not much atmosphere to the room, but I really like the food. There are a lot of other options there as well.

There's a vegetarian dim sum place in Chinatown called, I think, Vegetable Dim Sum House.

Those are the ones that come to mind, but there are plenty of vegetarian places and many, many places have veggie options.

I'm a carnivore (really omnivore) and I'm a big fan of candle cafe--I trust them that the food will be good! I actually don't think they are so pricy, sandiwches under 10, entrees 10-15, are standard prices in manhattan. the driks--btw--are the exception to thsi rule, $6 for a lemonade?!

Funny you would mention that. I remember being at Candle 79 and my partner commenting on the ridiculous price of beverages -- $6 for a cranberry juice, I think.
