i'm one of those who think it's one of the best pizzas in manhattan. it's all about the crust. only order one pie at a time, and order the simplest one. no wine, but there's a wine shop on 1st ave 1/2 block north (toward 14th)

i lived right down the street, so i ate there once a week if i could afford it--it ain't cheap.

They serve wine now and have for a while. Crust is good, but overall it's a ripoff. Just my 2 cents.

Pizza is good (thought not worth it IMHO), but I refuse to go to a place that doesn't serve free water. When I asked for a glass of tap I was told, "we only serve bottled water", and that's with a $7 or $8 glass of wine sitting in front of me.
How much of this B$ does one need to get before saying enough?

Apparently this is legal, although dispicable.

I will never eat at this place until they serve the best tap water in the world.

This really bugged me the last time we went; the overall price of going there just seems out of whack for the overall experience. I'll probably go elsewhere the next time I crave a great pizza. There were 4 adults and 1 child, and the bill was about about $120 with tip for 4 pizzas, 3 glasses of wine, a couple of sodas, and water. I can rationalize what they charge for a pizza given the care and ingredients that go into making it. On the other hand, I felt taken when we asked for water and we all got little bottles with inflated prices. They should at least warn people that they charge for water.

I also fall into the camp that believes that UPN makes a product that is worth the cramped, low-frills interior and the sometimes brain-numbingly frustrating service. the pizza is downright poetic. Transcendent even. Try the bianca, revel in the lactic elasticity of the mozzarella di bufala and the bright green herbaceous pools of extra virgin olive oil studded with shards of garlic and grains of sea salt. repeat as necessary.

thanks everyone, sounds great. Sounds like the guy is trying to give the real deal, maybe that's why the attitude. Maybe he feels a lot of people don't 'get it'. As far as price, if it is to much he won't sell enough, or as much as he could, but mozzarella di bufala is pricey, those pizzas must cost him 4 bucks each to make..compare that to maybe 1.50 for a normal 12'', he is also using dop san marzanos. i will see first hand in Nov hopefully.
