Rocky's Hamburgers in Oakland?

One of my favorite hamburgers is Rocky's Hamburgers in Oakland on College Ave. However it is now boarded up! Anyone know what happened to it and if they are gone for good? Does anyone know a similar hamburger in the area? The few that come to mind are the Smokehouse, 1/3 burger, and Barney's. I want something not as greasy, and I'm not a big fan of Barney's. Help!

  1. The Rocky's that used to be near city hall (16th and San Pablo ish?) also closed up, about a year ago. No idea about other branches...

Yeah I looked around for that one too but couldn't find it. Too bad, Rocky's had the best hamburger/french fry combination in the east bay.

I live right around the corner from the old Rocky's...
He actually moved his business to the CCAC (California college of arts and crafts) one block away.Still kinda open to the public. serves breakfast too!

Nice guy but... I always thought his burgers were weak,He used no quality ingredients, every thing was low end.

Hopfully Gaucho's will move back into the same spot, now those were the days.

Bistroburger at the Rotunda Building at the 12th St Civic Center just across from City Hall, has the best burgers in Oakland. They only do lunches from 8 am to 2.30 from M-F but if you get the chance you should check out their burgers. They also have excellent chicken and veggieburger sandwiches, the salads there are also top notch.

You can still get a delcious Rocky burger!

Rocky's moved and expanded and they are now on the CCAC campus just down the road on Broadway; entrance to the campus is at 5212 Broadway. Unfortunately it's not the cool little shack that it used to be. It's more like a cafeteria, but the Rocky burger I had there was still delicious...just get it to go.

        Rocky's, Oakland campus

Rocky's offers a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu to students and visitors of CCAC's Oakland campus. The café's specialty is burgers—beef, chicken, turkey, and vegetarian—yet it also offers a varied Asian menu ranging from Vietnamese spring rolls to tofu curry. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Prices accommodate a student's budget.

        Saturdays: 11 am–4 pm
        Closed Sundays

          Rocky's Report.
Nice juicy 1/3 pound burger with adequate size bun, lettuce. pickle, grilled onions, hold the tomato, with hot, crispy, greaseless, more than I could eat, fries and drink with refill $9. Good burger.
As noted by foodyumm, 2929 Shattuck near Ashby and down the block from Berkeley Bowl.

I'd concur on the burger -- we ate there a few weeks ago and the bun held up against eating and monitoring babyfoodnut through his dinner. They were very excited about having a toddler in the restaurant and came out from behind the kitchen/counter a couple of times to chat with us about our meal (and gave us an extra piece of fruit for the kiddo as we waited for the burgers to arrive).

My only fault would be that they didn't offer a kid's size burger, so we just got him a regular sized one and let him eat what he could. (A minor quibble, I just hate to waste food -- and burgers aren't something that I think are particularly doggy bag-able!)
