There is so much bad Cajun/Creole food in this city; it's ridiculous! My favorite place, Natchez, recently closed. What I can recommend is Bayou in Harlem; however, I have not been in a while. Also, Great Jones Cafe can be a good choice too!

I have not been there in about a year, but had pretty good LA style food a Gumbo Cafe on Columbus north of 107th, nice little place run by an NO native that was friendly and quite yummy by New York standards.

Jacque Imo's, which is wonderful in New Orleans, opened a place in Manhattan last year, but I haven't heard too much about it. Maybe give that a try?

I like Jacques Imo's NYC better than most other posters to Chowhound. It's not the same as the NO location, but there are still some great highlights... they still manage to find NO quality shrimp, the sausage-alligator cheesecake is as good as it is in NO, fried chicken is good, they serve Abita, etc.

Gumbo Cafe on Columbus and 107th is a soulful little spot that comes as close to New Orleans as you are gonna get on the island of Manhattan.

I'd absolutely vote for Gumbo Cafe!
All the traditional NO dishes like gumbo, jambalaya and beans & rice are definitely the best in NYC (both taste and price).
The BBQ shrimp is also so so yummy that my friend actually licked the plate!
They've recently opened the next door for dining space.
It's still so tiny but A/C is actually "working" and very comfortable.
Cute, friendly, very nice atmosphere.
