<content>I love the 4th of July weekend! It seems like everyone was out of town and the restaurants were all empty! I got lucky on Saturday night and walked into Tartine in the Village with no wait at all. We even snagged a sidewalk seat!

I have passed this place up because there are usualy mobs of people waiting to get seats. I have to say I was really surprised that the food was so good! I haven't seen a lot written here about Tartine but I am sure that its a favorite. We had some great food. I had the Spicy Chicken which was yummy and my friend had a cod fish special which left us speechless! Between the 3 of us we walked away with a $95 bill which was a great value.

I will say the desserts we had weren't that great but it didn't matter because we loves everything else.

There are pictures and descriptions on my blog. Check it out!

What does everyone else think of this place? I certainly think it was far better than Blue Ribbon, and far cheaper! I also liked that it was a BYOB!

<content>"Tartine" is now a Village institution, having survived for two decades plus with a loyal following. I also like going there when it's not busy. Sitting outside one day last Sept. having breakfast on a sunny weekday was such a pleasure after an early doctor's appt. My favorite pastry is the "chocolate delice" which i sometimes have in the late afternoon as a pick-me-up. A dependable place with dependable food at reasonable prices. </content>

<content>Yes, I realized how silly that was after I wrote it. No need to shill a place that always has a line in front of it! The post just sounded oddly enthusiastic about a place that is nothing special other than you get to save some $$$ and BYOB. (e.g speechless over fish at Tartine?)</content>

<content>Well if I said speechless I may have been dramatic but the dish was really beautiful and had a melange of flavors. Maybe they just had a good night with this one.

As some of you know, my opinions about fish are "questionable" especially since I have been accused of having a "limited palate". HA!

At least Tartine didn't leave the skin on!

Tartine is indeed an institution -- primarily for being BYO and cheap, not for its competent (no more and no less) semi-brassiere fare.

<content>Did you read what I wrote? I didn't criticise the restaurant for serving it, I just said that I didn't like skin on my fish. I also have no issue with Pomme Frites, but not on a highly priced $26 entree.

I actually appreciated the "french fries" at Tartine but when you are spending $100+ on a meal I don't think "pomme frites" is anything to talk about.

A nice Tartiflette, Galette Lyonnaise or Gratin Dauphinois is something to brag about! Pomme frites is just too easy.

i like blue ribbon but not a huge fan of it since along with their BEST oysters and bone marrow in the city it has a lot of faults. most of their entrees are bleh. but tartine's menu is so simple uncreative it can't be taken seriously as a restaurant. it is what it is... a cheap pseudo-french subpar bistro that lets you save money by letting you bring your own cheap wine...</content>

Well i never said that Tartine was a "serious" place, they are casual and make good food. Isn't that whats its all about? I love your description of "pseudo-french"! Thats sooo true! May I quote you?

anyway, if i lived in the neighborhood i'd probably be going to tartine more often. it's a definite plus for a neighborhood but i just wish they can do a little bit more with that menu to make me wanna go back. i'd love to open a nice rhone red and spend an evening at a restaurant knowing i probably spent less there than cooking on my own...

<content>I had some of the rudest treatment at Tartine I have ever experienced in a restaurant. The staff is downright nasty. </content>

<content>Can someone please explain why everyone raves about this place. I went on Sunday and it was terrible. They were out of 1/2 of their menu and what they did have wasn't that good. I went with 7 people and everyone universally panned it. The osso bucco was tough, the steak was mediocre (the pepper overwhelmed it). I would say this is more French truck stop than French bistro. They were out of 3 of 7 desserts and the creme brule was not good and the meringue was only ok.</content>

<content>Boss77, I haven't been to Tartine in ages and only during nice weather. We got tired of the long lines (place is very tiny) and less than friendly service. Maybe because it is BYOB (at least it used to be when I went last)? </content>
