how is angon on sixth lately?
i'm looking at places in the east village for a cozy, really good, fairly casual indian dinner for four people.
how does angon compare to spice cove? or the madras cafe? or haveli? i've only been to madras and, if i remember correctly, the food was good but atmosphere pretty plain and not very cozy.

Madras Cafe is better. I went to Angon twice after Mina was gone. The first time was fine, but the second time was AWFUL. Way too salty and just not that tasty. Haveli underwhelmed me the last couple of times I went there - great decor but unimpressive food. I've never been to Spice Cove.

she's still there.
however, there never appears to be anyone in there....looks like they really need some business.›6 Replies-
re: Nathan
You know, there's a reason that other places on the street do better than they do.... I think it still has to do with the slow service, namely the speed with which the food is served. I know, I know, "...home cooking, lovingly prepared from scratch takes time, Mina is a National Treasure, it is her alone cooking, blah blah blah..." Other restaurants seem to be able to get it right and not lose quality. I loved Mina's and tried Angon a few times, but now choose Banjara over Angon. (I did so Sunday and had a great meal!). Banjara's food is bright and tasty and the room is more attractive/ modern. Service wasn't all that smooth, but at least the food came out promptly. Let's be realistic, most people don't want to spend 2.5 hours for an Indian meal in a 6th street basement.

re: Pot Belly
Don't know about lassis as I don't drink them with a meal and I tend to skip desserts, esp. in summer.
Told them we wanted entrees spicy and not to hold back. Got a chicken vindaloo and it was HOT. Also got a lamb special and it was spiced in a tomato and onion based sauce that was highly spiced but not heat-wise. Could have been hotter, but with the vindaloo it really would have been overhwelming for one meal. Had it been the only dish we ordered, we would have wanted it hotter.
Started with chicken livers and little miniature poori(s). My buddy called them pooritos. And a stuffed baigan - eggplant rollatini of sorts, rolled around shrimp in a red sauce. Both were great. Naan was average. Hope that helps.

re: cowgal
must say - i've been there many times over these last months and it's been semi full if not full, the service has been absolutely fine, and the food is still extremely good - all of it. so, maybe you're remembering the old days or have had some unfortunate timing. but to any others reading along - it's not slow and it's delicious.

re: My Melody
Dal fry, as named and served at the original Mina's, was a unique version of the yellow lentil dal ordinarily served at Indian restaurants everywhere, usually as a condiment. Here it came as a dish, covered with crispy fried onions and loaded with hot chilis that I got in the habit of eating because they were so delicious (in small bites, of course). This dal had a complex flavor derived from whatever magic masala Mina was using, and it was unlike anything I've ever eaten, at least when Mina was cooking.
By the way, I found no current postings on Mina's presence at Angon, at least nothing beyond late 2004.
