Next Monday (5/30) after we land around 5 p.m., take the shuttle to our hotel and drop off our luggage, we plan to go straight to the ESB ( a block or so away from our hotel) and hopefully get up to the top near sunset. After enjoying that view, we will be hungry and ready to eat dinner. Any recommendations near there? We're a family of 4 with 2 teenage sons (14 & 17). Are delis open for dinner? I've promised one son good pastrami. :) We'd be wanting something a little on the quick side so we can get to bed at a decent hour. And not too pricey as we have many things ahead to spend $$ on. Oh...and not pizza as we have plans to do that the next night.

Thanks!!

The best kosher deli near there is probably Mendy's (corner of 34th & Park). Delis will all be open for dinner. Have fun!

For a really Excellent pastrami sandwich try Sarge's Delicatessan on 3rd Ave. between 36th and 37th Streets. It's open 24 hours a day and has the feel of a traditional NY deli. Also order some of their excellent potatoe salad.

I think Korean on 32nd Street(btwn Bwy and 5th) is a great choice. Korea town is directly behind the ESB and there are some great choices. Kang Suh and Kum Gang San. There are so many to choose from.

If you want deli. Ben's is good too. It is on 38th and 8th.

Enjoy NY!

If you've promised your son "good pastrami," *the* place to get it is Katz's, at the corner of Houston (pronounced "how-stun") & Ludlow Sts., on the Lower East Side. The pastrami there is not merely good -- it's fabulous! However, Katz's is not close to the Empire State Building; it's a short cab ride away. If you refer to have dinner near the ESB, I strongly suggest you have something other than deli and go to Katz's another day.

Dinner suggestions within walking distance of the ESB:

Kang Suh, corner of B'way & 32nd St. Excellent Korean barbecue.

Ali Baba, 34th St., b/t 2nd & 3rd Avs. Good Turkish food.

Ethos, 3rd Av., b/t 33rd & 34th Sts. Delicious Greek food.

Ok. There is a deli on the corner of Madison and 31 st, NW corner. It is a very divey looking corner deli. In the back there is a very bad salad bar -- AVOID. But there is also a grill with a sandwich guy, and he makes hot sandwiches, including a very good hot pastrami with grilled onions. This is not fancy, one-of-kind pastrami (go to Katz's or someplace instead if that is what you want). This is a quick cheap sandwich -- like 6 bucks per sandwich and nowhere to sit, but if you are looking for something quick and to-go, it will do you.

Otherwise, you can go to the Gingerman, which is a bar, but a nice one to eat at. 36 St, east of 5th Ave. Get basics like burgers and such. Comfortable, not too expensive, but not a culinary marvel. Keep it simple. Do a search here, as the menu there has been discussed before.

If you want something nicer (and pricier), you have Artisanal (2 Park Ave at 32 St). French bistro with specialty in cheese. Check out menu on menupages.com.

That area is sort of a culinary wasteland, because it's a touristy hub. If possible, you are better off going elsewhere (like down to Katz's per RGR's suggestion.)
