Recently moved to the Upper East Side and have been unsuccessfully searching to find a decent diner - used to love the Gee Whiz diner in Tribeca but can't find anything worth returning to or ordering from up here. Ideas? Thanks!

I live at the top end of the E70's and we have found the Mansion Diner at 86 Street and York Ave to be the best around. We stick with the dinner specials such as beef stew but the meat loaf is good as well as the turkey dinner (great mashed potatoes). The tuna melt is very good as well as the egg salad sandwich, but they don't make a very good burger.

Once in a while we go to The Wicked Wolf on 1st Ave in the mid 70's but the food is very rich. Try the prime rib special. Not bad! And they put out a nice bread basket.

As for Googie's - I'm not a fan, even less so of Barking Dog where everything I ever ordered tasted bitter.

For a good burger or grilled cheese try Restaurant 79 on the corner of 79th and 1st Ave, but don't go for dinner meals! Yuch!

Yorkville Diner & Gracie Mews are also on my "never again" list.

Uh..no Green Kitchen...we used to love it too, until baby roaches kept crawling out from underneath the dishes.

What is wrong with the Yorkville Dinner? Its brand new isn't it? Haven't tried it yet, but some negative posts here.

Yorkville Diner is clean, new and the waiters are attentive but the dinner entrees are an exact replica of the ones at Restaurant 79 (79th & 1st) and Gracie Mews (1st & 82nd?) and just about 3000 other Greek diners. Even the gyro is blah, just like in typical
Greek diners. Also, don't bother getting a burger, you'll do much better at Restaurant 79 for that.

But I don't mind eggs for breakfast at Yorkville although I can do 100% better on the Westside.

I've never been to Green Kitchen but my wife was taken there for breakfast by a local friend and she hated it.

I wholeheartingly agree, Yorkville Diner is disgusting. I have no idea why it is still operating.

My husband is a big fan of Frankie's, on Second Ave and 80th/81st. I noticed their new awning over the weekend now shares their name with the recently closed Mocca's. All the more reason to pay them a visit.

Opened a few months, there is a place call Peter's on First Ave., between 83rd & 84th. Pretty decent for lunch.

Frankie's really is the best-- a bit of a time machine to what I imagine the old Yorkville/Germantown days were like. Full of friendly regulars and wait-staff that has been there forever. While nothing on the menu is the most incredible food you'll have-- absolutley everything is comforting, delicious, and solidly prepared. I haven't been since the addition of Mocca-- but I can only imagine the pairing of the two will be perfect!

I think Gracie's diner at 86th & 1st is great. They're always extremely friendly there, and if you want to eat healthy (i.e., whole wheat French toast w/sugar-free syrup, or a reuben made w/fat-free cheese), they're happy to do it for you.

I haven't, though, tried any of their regular dinner entrees, so I can't vouch for those.
