New in Chelsea/Flatiron: Daniele's Piadina
Stumbled across a new sandwich place, Daniele's Piadina, on 22nd St near 6th Ave. Right now, the menu's got just 7 different sandwiches, all VERY Italian and stuffed into piadina flatbread. (prosciutto, Strachino and arugula is one example.)
It's cute and bright and small. Reminds me a lot of F&B on 23rd. There's a counter with a few seats here, but it's really aiming at takeout and deliveries. Didn't try the food.
On the plus side, it's very close to the New York Cake and Baking Supply Co., which is a great stop for cooks.
This neighborhood is starting look better. It's long been a dead zone for decent, simple meals, except for the amazing and grungy Great Burrito. (Outback Steak and Olive Garden are NOT eligible).
Now we've got Daniele's Piadina, Rickshaw (ok, it's not amazing, but it's better than Cosi), Pongsri and R.U.B. all within a block or two.
There is a small piece about this place in todays New York Magazine. It sounds very promising... I want to try it out, please share any other info you have about this place. Is there seating?

Sort of. It's like F&B. Barstools and a counter up the side of the restaurant. No tables.

The food is great. My favorites are the Milano and the Firenze. All the ingredients are fresh and they are all made to order. The coffe and drink options are also plentiful and all very good.

Piadina should be made with flatbread which is kind of the bread of the pizza but super flat and crispy. Instead, in this place they use Mexican flour tortillas and don't even cook them well. The menu says mozzarella the buffala and they use a low quality regular mozzarella. The "olive oil" is not even olive. They use green coloring to make things look authentic. Miserable even for a fast food place.

I enjoyed it for what it is, decent fast food with some flavor. Whether it's like the real thing, I can't say. But it's a nice change in the area.
