Blind Tiger does serve some Trappist beers. Dunno if you know, but trappist means it's brewed by monks in europe. Or at least in the same style. Never heard of Westvleteren, not sure if they have it at Blind Tiger. Another bar to try might be Vol de Nuit, an exclusively Belgian bar on west 4th street. Also DBA. There are a number of excellent delis and beer distributors in Manhattan and Brooklyn that might stock it too.

A Trappist ale is brewed at one of six (currently) Trappist monasteries that brews beer. These are Westvleteren, Chimay, Achel, Westmalle, Orval and Rochefort.

An ale brewed in the Trappist style is called an abbey ale.

A good way to find out where to get these beers is to (join and) post at beeradvocate.com or ratebeer.com. There used to be a NYC beer mailing list, which you might find if you poke around a bit on the Web.

The only place that I have seen Westvleteren (I don't recall if it was 10 or 12 to be honest) in all of New York including all of the places listed in the other posts excluding Bierkraft which I have not been to in a long time is Bistro one 10 on 110th and Amsterdam. It seems like they had both, but I'm not sure. It is indeed a very nice beer, don't think I would call it the world's best though. I've had the good fortune to have been taken to the Monastary a couple of times on trips to Belgium and that is a great experience but one that also makes it very rare that I feel like paying 10+ dollars for an 11.2 oz bottle here, although I guess you can drink quite a few for the price of airfare.

Hi. I've been looking for this too. I heard recently (from a few beverage directors & bartenders) that its not being shipped to the US at the moment. Two pubs that keep it on hand whenever they can get it are The Ginger Man and Burp Castle. Worth giving them a ring to see if distribution is back on track.

BTW, I'm pretty positive the only true trappist beers are the 6 Jim mentioned. I think La Trappe was done in the style of.

La Trappe is a confusing story, since at one time the monastery made the beer. I don't think it's been a Trappist brew for several years.

The problem with Westvleteren is that (AFAIK) it's not really imported officially, although there is an importer that lists it on its web site. So, people go on the tour and buy the small amount (a case or two, something like that) they're allowed afterward, and consolidate it for shipment. Then there's talk that the abbey hasn't sold it lately. Who knows what the truth is.

This is true, when you purchase from the Abbey you are essentially entering into an agreement pledging that you will not resell the beer. The last time I was there, we were not able to purchase cases (always call ahead)and had to buy a multitude of loose bottles to go from the Cafe at a considerable mark up; 50% if I recall correctly from the bulk case price of around 1 Euro a pop. The lack of a real importer certainly makes it quite difficult to track down with any regularity.

I have seen Westvleteren at two places in the city, although they don't always have it, and not always the 12. (The 10 is outstanding as well, and Rochefort is probably the closest in style.)

Happy Deli - 750 8th Avenue at 46th Street

Amazing selection of everything, and very, very expensive.

Fancy Grocery - 27 1/2 Morton St., at 7th Ave South

Chatty proprieter; he'll help you get what you need or recommend something close. Great store, much more reasonable prices than Happy Deli.

Just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone who has chimed in. As a quick fix, I've just placed an order with vintagecellar.com for some Westvleteren (as well as Chimay, Duvel, St. Bernardus, De Dolle Ara, and Abbay Des Rocs).

I still look forward, though, to hunting down some more through the recommendations you've made.
