can't let a first-time poster turn up without any suggestions--except that the Orpheum isn't a great area for food.

Millenium (upscale vegan) is nearby on McAllister. Others on this board like it more than I do. There have also been favorable reports for Gyro King across from the main library, but it's a pretty simple place.

Your best options are to head back toward Union Square and away from Market (maybe Shalimar or Naan & Curry) or out toward Hayes Valley, across civic center plaza. In Hayes Valley, I'll recommend Pauk K's on Gough and Oak.

Haven't been there for a couple of years, but I've had a nicely done jägerschnitzel (veal cutlet with a mushroom sauce) at Schnitzelhaus, on 9th Street near Folsom, a little more than three blocks south of the Orpheum. Good selection of German beer, too, which right around now should include fairly fresh märzens from Oktoberfest.

Nothing better than a solid Bavarian dinner before a musical about consumptive bohemians.
