A friend is coming in from CA with some excellent wine, we need a good place that will allow us to bring in our own, corkage in the $20-25 range would be acceptable. (have seen some places with $35-50 corkage which is absurd). Any suggestions, nice place, reqally good food. Thanks. It's a Fri, so Montrachet is out (I know about the monday's BYO)

$45?!? That's extortion. As if they weren't already getting every penny out of the consumer with that pay-for-each-part-of-your-meal thing.

I can understand places like Sparks charging 35-45, they have a alrge list and are really discouraging you from bringing a wine, though they have many wines in the 35-65 range and are not making 45 on those. There are many rest.'s in NY with really good food, (not Daniel or Per Se quality but good none-the-less)In CA they allow corkage for many places, and quite frankly I doubt that other then the $100+ per person places, most of the others do not average $100 a bottle per table. But thanks for your thoughts anyway. NY should be more like CA and encourage wine drinking instead of marking up 3X. (OK on a 20 bottle but a little nuts on a Insignia for example) By the way my friend is brinking some 87 cabs which most places, other then top wine restaraunts, have on their list.

I haven't been there in a few years but Union Square Cafe used to have a low corkage (perhaps $15). While USQ's quality is often debated on this board, I think it's a dependable (if not always exciting) choice with good service.

Thanks to all, please continue if you have a new place to go to (dinner is 3/5). I found Seppi's (in the Parker Meridian) $15 corkage, food is bistro, good (not Craft, but the wine is what will shine) they have a nice atmosophere, very European, and we can sit for a long time.
