Where to Buy Xanthan Gum - and please help me better place this post

memling Jan 6, 2005 02:52 PM

Hi, I want to bake a wheat-free, gluten-free treat for an allergic friend and every recipe I can find calls for xanthan gum. Can anyone tell me where in Manhattan I can buy this ingredient?
Also, I seem to recall that there is a better section of Chowhound for these kinds of non-restaurant questions, but I couldn't seem to find it this time. Please advise if necessary.
Thanks in advance!

I have a slightly different query, I need to know how to use xanthan gum in recipes when converting ordinary bread, scone, pastry, etc. recipes to gluten free.

You also might want to try some of the mixes that are ready made. Getting a tasty combo of GF flours is a lot of work for just one cake! I you didn't want to deal with the Xanthan Gum/flour issue, you could try a nut torte. Please also be aware that your pans may contain gluten if you keep them seasoned, so you might want to use foil ones... I am very sensitive to gluten so I have been through this!

You can get Xanthum gum at most (every?) health food/organic store (you know, those neighborhood health stores packed from floor to ceiling with health food products and nutritional supplements) in the city and perhaps even at Whole Foods.
