Pumpkin Pie

I have a craving for a very good pumpkin pie. I thought I would find one at the Ferry Plaza farmers market, but when I was there last (the weekend before last) all I could find was a pumpkin walnut cake at Miette (very good). Any suggestions for where I can get an excellent pumpkin pie?

Just Desserts made the best store-bought pumpkin pie I've ever had. Church Street branch is (415) 602-9245.

Better than Fat Apple's or Crixia???
I live but 2 minutes walk away...but I can't imagine them having anything I like...they even did away with the mocha buttercream loaf.......
      I anxiously await your comparison!

No. As to the Crixa/FatApple debate ... Crixa ... which is saying alot because it is deep dish and not traditional looking. From last year ...

That being said, I tried to snag a piece of Bakesale Betty's on Saturday but it was too late in the day. Don't think I ever tried Lola's last year. I'm interested in trying Healdsburg's Downtown Bakery version. I kind of killed my pumpkin craving with the ice cream crawl, though.

I forgot about Bakesale Betty's. The blueberry pie of theirs I had at Pizzaiolo was exactly like homemade. Not counting fancy little tarts, I haven't had a commercial pie that was that good in many years. I'd expect their pumpkin to be excellent.

Crixa's pumpkin pie sounds good...but that cranberry-walnut pie (their other seasonal speciality) sounds diabolically good. Has anyone tried it?

I had their pumpkin pie a few weeks ago, and was expecting greatness (because I had that blueberry pie, as well as the nectarine, and the even better plum). It was good, but not great, and the crust was a little too hard. I would go way out of my way for the other three of their pies that I've tried, but the pumpkin didn't wow me.

Best pumpkin pie in the Bay Area? Beyond a doubt, it's at Crixa in Berkeley. Super thick, custard-like, with a crust that resembles a deep-dish pizza--it's unbelievable. Check out their website:

        Truly the best!

          Poet,
Have you had the pumpkin pie at Fat Apples?...This was the best I have had,,(but I'm always willing to try another)..a comparison of the two would be great...but I'll have to travel to the East Bay either way I guess!

I asked this same question last year (link below). I ended up getting one by Upper Crust from Mollie Stones, mentioned in that thread.

Looking back at that thread, it makes me giggle that it degenerated into notes re how to make your own pumpkin pie. I do not bake, and purchased a pumpkin pie from Andronico's last week (not as good as Upper Crust, but decent). Walking around the store with that pie in my cart, I got into a conversation with an older woman in the produce section who couldn't believe that I was BUYING a $12 pie instead of purchasing the pie crust, and the Libby's pumpkin from the can and making my own. Total guilt trip, and pretty funny.

Good luck with your search! Let us know what you end up finding.

Perhaps they were sold out by the time you got there, but the fellow that sells almonds and grapes, etc.(Lagier?), had pumpkin pies at 8:00 last Saturday. His bakers use a wonderful pastry flour mixture that includes some whole wheat flour as well. I really don't like whole wheat flour in pie crust, but these crusts are exceptional. His berry and cherry pies are great, too.
