I am a non-vegetarian who loves really good vegeterian or even vegan meals- i.e. meskerem, where you can sop up delicious veggie stews with spongy injera, almost any asian restaurant (especially south india)...you get the point. This is why I am so confused about vegetarian joints like this one (to be fair, lifethymes- also an organic supermarket- has some organic chicken and fish) offers vegetarian food that is just plain gross, and gives people like Anthony Bordain more reasons to feel good ripping on people who chose a veggie lifestyle. I have tried numerous dishes at their takeout counter- the strawberry cheesecake and pumpkin pie had strong medicinal aftertastes. The quinoa "power pie" tasted like flavorless mush. Do vegetarians really eat this stuff? It's not like this is all there is- the tofu cheesecake at Teany's in the LES is phenomenal! I'm just really curious how other people feel about this.

I actually tried lifethymes this week at the urging of my sister who seems to live on takeout from them. I tried the raw pizza and tofu lasagne- all I can say is YUCK. I also am openminded to vegetarian cuisine. Going by my sister, she doesn't care to go out of her way to find really good vegan places, and she doesn't care too much for ethnic food...thus, she's like my friend who is on atkins- if you stop eating good food long enough, you probably trick your brain into liking it. Since you mentioned Anthony Bordain, he put it best- sometimes the best veggie dishes can be found in restaurants that cater to carnivores.

I shop at LifeTyme often--their maple pecan fresh-popped popcorn is incredibly addictive (like upscale cracker jacks) and a good deal at $1.50/bag. I also like their banana-walnut wheat-free mini muffins--they are actually just the right size and much better than most muffins on the market now. Their salad bar is good too; and once (just once, don't know where it has gone) the hot bar had this really excellent chicken stew (their normal chicken is often dried out). Oh and their soup is very decent. But I admit that I've never tried their prepared foods behind the counter--they look scary, thanks for the warning that I shouldn't muster the courage. And if you are in the nabe looking for healthy eats (ok the popcorn isnt really so healthy...) hope these suggestions help.

Their vegetables aren't usually that great though. Wholefoods has much better quality organic vegetables.

I never tried their salad bar, so I can't comment. Good to know they actually make some things that are edible!:}

I tried their coconut cake because it looked really good, and I've had really good vegan cakes before...complete waste of money, as I had to throw it out after the first bite.
I would try their salad bar if I was there and really hungry, but I don't see the point as there are so many good veggie places nearby, and after reading these posts, I'd be scared to try.
I would recommend this place for good organic groceries- they have a pretty good selection, and hard to find things like sunflower butter.
