I have to meet a friend for lunch this week who works in Lower Manhattan. Last time we had a burger at Ulysses on Stone Street. Can any suggest a good, casual sit down place for lunch in that area? Is the Fraunces Tavern any good?

Last I knew, Fraunces had closed and became a museum. it was great; full of days-gone-by atmosphere and clubbiness and fascinating history (washington bade farewell to his troops there and much more, i'm sure).

Caveat: i've moved out of the city over the past year, so things may have changed.

Oh, cool. In that case I'd recommend it for solid, old-fashioned (kinda New Englandy, colonial) fare in an historic atmosphere. Nothing outstanding or innovative; but enjoyable standards (quite good clam chowder, I recall).

I don't think Fraunces Tavern is very good. It's passable, but nothing great foodwise. I'd recommend Smorgas, which is Scandanavian on Stone, or Financier for panini. For upscale, Battery Gardens or 14 Wall.

Zeytuna near the Federal Reserve is excellent and has outdoor seating. Upstairs, they are like a Fairway or Zabars. Downstairs, they have a sit-down restaurant as well as a cafeteria-style section. Everything from pizza to sushi to roast chicken. Don't be alarmed by the selection, it's all very good.

I was also going to mention Zeytuna, or if way downtown, near Batttery Park, they also own The Amish Store, which has a wonderful array of fresh everything. Their brick oven pizzas are also top notch, totally organic and very satisfying. You just can't go wrong there.
