Good homework/laptop/study bar/cafe/restaurant ...

Need a place to plop down on a table or at a bar to study with some background noise. Food, coffee, beer, whatever. As much as I'd like to do homework at Babbo, I think it's just too close to school for me.

Suggestions? East Village, Lower East Side

Preferably not that close to NYU, no Star*ucks, I'm an older student (30's), hate saying that.

  1. Grey Dog Cafe on Carmine street! Good coffe, good vibe & some decent eats!

    1. re: Raymond

Grey Dog seems to get pissed off if you hang out for a while (at least they used to have a rule against it -- haven't been there in a year).
Doma would fit the bill perfectly (7th Ave and Perry)
Cafe Leibowitz on weeknights (Spring and Elizabeth but I think it's moving) also would work

      1. re: Nathan

Cafe Leibowitz is moving? I used to like hanging there with a drink, but the space is gutted. I assumed it was no more.

    2. Cafe Pick Me Up on 9th and Ave A. It's perfect this time of year because the only bad thing about it is that it gets too hot in the summer. The food (which I've never had) doesn't look too great but the coffee is definitely good.

      1. 88 Orchard (at Broome) has good food, free wi-fi, nice atmosphere, mediocre coffee though. I've studied there many a time.
Drink Me on 6th (B/C) has slightly better coffee, decent chow, free wi-fi with a purchase, nice environs.
Space Untitled at Greene St (Prince/Houston) always has interesting people to look at while studying. Coffee's decent, food's decent, wi-fi, but it's not free.
Sometimes I go to DTUT, on Ave B (3/4), but I find it a little sterile, kind of like a very comfy Holiday Inn lounge. They have free wi-fi, but the coffee is average and the food is terrible. The music's just loud enough to be slightly annoying. There's a large outdoor space that's also good for studying.
If you want good coffee, consider Joe on Waverly one block west of 6th Ave. Comfortable space, no food, nice sweets.
Another contender is Le Gamin on E5 (A/B), and it happens to be next door to my favorite ramen shop in NYC, Minca.

        1. Anyone have suggestions for the same closer to midtown? I live near 54th and 2nd, and can't find a good place to settle in for a long day's work...
