Favorite Private Rooms in Manhattan?

It seems that every time I turn around lately, someone (usually at work) asks me for a recommendation about what restaurant they should use for a private party. Most of the requests come from people looking to host between 15 and 35 people. Some want high-end (e.g. Gramercy) and others want funky or inexpensive. Location within the city isn't a big deal, except that below 57th street is preferred.

I've had meals in the private rooms (or reserved areas) of Lupa, Kings Carriage House, Oceana, Scalini Fideli, Metrazur, 21, Gramercy, 11 Madison, Cibo, Blue Smoke, Il Buco, Beacon, Le Bernardin, Danube, Morton's, Shun Lee, Plataforma, and Teodora.

Other than the above places and Chinese and Chinatown, what are your favorites? Although the majority of places described above, I'm interested in ideas that are all over the map in terms of price point.

Thanks in advance!

  1. The private room at Woo Lae Oak was nice, although I have not eaten in the regular dining room. A little cozy because you sit on the floor and leave your shoes at the door.

    1. Palm West has a nice private dining room which accomodated 20 of us. They have 3 rooms, I believe.

      1. "March" Restaurant has two private rooms. Click on link for pics and menu/price options.

        1. The private room upstairs at Le Bernardin is lovely. The private room(s) at Le Cirque are very nice too.

High end is relative - Gramercy Tavern is not it, in my opinion...that being said, you have to know where your group would be comfortable and what their priorities/criteria are, of course...

Thanks for the input, everyone! As for type of restaurant, here's the deal....

I'm particularly interested in places that have very good food, but not necessarily a "top or even semi-top restaurant" in terms of quality or price (We could go on ad infinitum as to which restuarants fall into what categories). I think I have a decent, although by no means stellar, grasp of these.

Rather, I'm seeking out places that, in addition to the food--not necessarily "fancy" and not opposed to "ethnic" (another debatable term, I know)--have a lively vibe, friendly, helpful service, and an attractive space for groups of the size. Perhaps another factor: the age group tends to skew towards late 20's - late 40's. In all, something that someone who frequents places like the ones I originally listed would really appreciate, but find a little different, and/or perhaps a little more "fun."

            Hope this helps!

          2. For an informal brunch on a very crisp fall morning...I love the tiny private room at Blue Ribbon Bakery. It is nothing compared to the others you mentioned, but I like it nonetheless.

            1. The private dinning room at Batali's Italian Wine Merchants is a fantastic and diiferent expierence, I've been to a couple of corporate events and one rehearsal dinner there, all were great, you would probably need at least 30 people......afetr my first meal at Per Se, I can only imagine what their private room and banquest facilities are like....

              1. Keens Steakhouse has great, old-NY private rooms.

                1. I've done a number of events in City Hall Restaurant's Granite Room (see link below) which is a great spot for 20-50 people (or more for cocktails)

                  1. try canapa. it's the new room opened by and next door to petrosino one of the new best italian restaurants in the l.e.s. i've had my birthday there and a good friend of mine, on my reccomendation, just had his new post-gallery opening party there. we both had a great time. the room is very warm with a very hip decor.
the food is excellent: they can serve you from two different menus, so you'll have lots of flexibility there. you can see a picture on city search.
                    good luck!
