I'm interested in finding the local sandwich shops/diners, or whatever in the Mendocino area, preferably on the cheap.

I recall that the last time I went to Mendocino years ago, there was a fantastic ice cream shop on the main street, just opposite an enormously huge blackberry bush on the other side of the road. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or what this is called?

Good sandwiches , salads, breads, etc. in very informal atmosphere to be found on the main drag at the end on the right. Can't remeber the name. Something like Mendocino Coffee Company. We had a really great extravagant dinner at Stevenswoode Lodge. Awesome wine list and view with mediocre food at the Albion River Inn. Good luck on the good/cheap eats. Most everything in Mendocino Village seems like a "touristy" kind of place.

Real old fashioned greasy hamburgers and real potato french fries. They do have ice cream that you scoop yourself and weigh and pay by the weight - didn't try that so don't know if it's good ice cream. Avoid the Bayview Cafe upstairs looking over the water - we were served inedible (way undercooked) scallops at lunch. Did get some good takeout food - salads and sandwiches - at the place next to the cookie and muffin store on the main street. Also, if you want to drive up to Fort Bragg, the North Coast Brewing Company has decent pub food at reasonable prices.

The Bayview is terrible. The only time to go is for breakfast and only get the basics (scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, toast).

A better recommendation for cheap eats is the Mendo Market, across the street from the post office on Ukiah St. They have great sandwiches, both cold and hot, as well as rotating specials and salads. Their tuna salad is made with Ahi and is very good. They also have a really good, though small, selection of wines and cheeses. Service can be slow, though, especially if you go during the lunch rush.

Tote Fete has some decent, if overpriced food. Their baguettes are really good-- nicely salted with a yeasty taste, if not quite as crusty as I prefer.

A Tote Fete baguette and some Cambazola and olives from Mendo Market make a nice lunch out on the headlands somewhere.

There's a Mendocino Ice Cream Company on Main Street, same side of the street as Dick's Bar (bloody marys...mmmmmmm) - all of this is opposite a field (part of the headlands) where they usually erect a tent for the Mendo Music Festival.

I think you will do better for less money in Ft Bragg than in Mendocino. I really liked Mendo Burgers but my wife was less impressed- it looked like a relic from the 60's when I was last there.
