Dumpling Man - St. Mark's
Riding the M8 bus last night, I saw a sign for a new place on the south side of St. Mark's between 1st and A called, I believe, "Dumpling Man".
Any info/reports?

Went this week. There are 4 varieties -- pork, calamari, vege, and something else. You can get them steamed, fried, or Marco Polo (fried in some sauce). Sizes are 4 & 8 pieces. Combos are available to try the different varieties. Prices are cheap. When I went they said they had just fried a batch and the grill wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes to fry more (this preparation entailed the lady pouring a thick layer of oil repeatedly on a griddle). So I got the steamed -- which did not present the dumplings to their fullest advanatage, I assume. Calamari, vege and the other were bland -- vege especially so. The pork was okay, but not as good as gyoza from any okay Japanese joint. Very disappointing. Good idea, mediocre execution.

Actually, anything fried usually tastes pretty good, so I think steamed is the best way to tell how good the wrapper is and get a clearer understanding of what's inside.

I agree. But to give the folks the benefit of the doubt, I wanted to be clear I didn't try the fried ones; like someone giving a review of McD's based off their vege burgers. I'm going to eat some fried dumplings now. And wash it down with a cup of cold gravy with a hair in it (extra-points for anyone who gets that reference).

It a line Davy Jones says in the movie "Head" that the Monkees made.

i also had the steamed pork dumplings because they were out of the fried. i too thought they were mediocre. the filling wasn't anything special and the skin, while it tasted fresh, was too thick for the amount of filling.
