Bamiyan on 3rd and 26th is an excellent persian/afghan restaurant- the cushioned seats in the front give it a more "ethnic" feel. I've tried their chicken kebabs- perhaps the most flavorful and juicy I've ever had. Their "special rice" is really good, but too sweet for me. My fav is chicken fajan [sp?]- chicken stewed with walnuts and pomegrante juice- mmmm.

I've heard from Persian friends that the one in Rosyln is better than the NYC one, and I've been 3x to the Rosyln one, great 2x ,and then undercooked chicken and surly service the third time. Colbeh has a manhattan location which is kosher persian, and I think the quality of their chicken is much better, as the Colbeh in Great Neck is excellent, and better than the Colbeh in Queens.

Although I've never tried the Colbeh in Great Neck, the Colbeh on 39th street in Manhattan was overpriced with bad service and horrible food (both in terms of quality and preparation). No one working there was Persian, and the cooks obviously lacked sympathy for Persian cooking. Cures you of homesickness for chelow kebab in thirty seconds or under.

Depending on your dietary restrictions and which Persian dishes you want to try, take into account that glatt kosher restaurants make atypical versions of many Persian dishes because they omit butter, whey, cheese etc.

Ravagh is the best we've tried so far in Manhattan, although the competition is not very stiff. Their kashk-e bademjan (eggplant with yogurt) is always tasty.
