There is a fish market on 2nd Avenue around 6th Street (east side of street).

The closest good meat is Dean & Deluca on the corner of Broadway & Prince. Otherwise you'd have to go to West Village or into Gramercy.

I agree with Wilfrid with respect to fish -- just hop on the 6 train to Grand Central and go to Wild Edibles. But as to butchers, you can get fine pork at Kurowycky Meat Products, 124 First Avenue btwn. 7th Street and St. Mark's. They are one of the few butchers that don't get pork in a kryovac -- they get pigs and break them down. I get them to cut 2" thick pork chops a lot. I also get entire pork loins, which they can halve and tye up to make one gargantuan pork roast, or two big ones. They'll also do fancy stuff like crown roasts, if you call ahead. Finally, they have wonderful house-smoked hams and geese -- nice for a party if you don't feel like cooking. I'm not a kielbasa guy, but theirs is said to be first rate. Beware -- this is a Martha Stewart-recommended place, so there will be an insanely long line before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.

For chicken, the best you can do is a Bell & Evans from Second Avenue Meat Market (2nd ave btwn. 8th/9th). Whole birds or breasts, which they debone with great skill. Great bread there, too -- Lithuanian rye, I think.

Unfortunately, neither of the above two places are great shakes for beef, unless you want stew meat, or ground beef, or maybe ribs to braise. The closest thing to a source for steak is Victor's Market, at First Avenue and Thirteenth Street. But the place always seemed a little skeevy to me. It's probably worth the trip to Sixth Avenue to Florent or Jefferson Market.

I was under the impression that Victor's was gone. They did used to have servicable meat and sometimes fish.

For meat I would trek up to 2nd & 22nd to French Butcher. Pricey, but real good.

That's exactly the rap I heard about the French butcher -- nice cuts, big prices. I'm told they have good prepared foods as well, also pricey.

Victor's has been closed for quite awhile now.

The fish store on 2nd next to the French Butcher is ok as is the one on 1st (around 8th ish?)

Imho, the only reason to head up to the French Butcher is to buy one of their roasted chickens. Nicely herbed and roasted with an onion inside.

Otherwise, I have not been been impressed with either TFB's selection (no calves liver), quality (steaks), prices or service.

BTW, does the owner/butcher ever stop in anymore? I haven't seen him around in quite sometime. Usually, the shop is staffed by a youngish guy.

For meat in the nabe, best bet is to wait for a sale at Food Emporium in Union Sq (ie. shell steaks @$7/lb) unless you want to head to a butcher in another part of town or catch freshdirect on the rare days that the prices drop. (right now shell steaks are $10/lb).

There's a bus from Ave. B (M9) originating from Union Square that goes directly to Chinatown where you can buy all the fresh meat, fish and veggies for a song.Otherwise, I just order from Fresh Direct. I buy prepared foods from Russ and Daughter's on Houston and 1st and Roasted Chicken from Casa Adela on Ave. C and and 4th St. I've never had a better roasted chicken than there's! It's worth the trek and for 7 bucks per whole chicken well worth it!

There's a very decent fish market called Young's - on the west side of 1st Ave, just south of 9th or St Marks. I've gotten all manner of whole fish, filets & steaks from them - all fresh, all good. Prices aren't bad, either.

The French Butcher *is* very expensive, but I order my Thanksgiving D'Artagnan turkey from him every year. I've gotten some lamb loin, as well, and it was terrific . . . but wickedly expensive.

Ceriello's, in Grand Central, is fabulous IMO and the prices aren't bad.

I wouldn't recommend Wild Edibles in Grand Central, just because the prices are so inflated. Pescatore (also in GC) is the same way. The 2nd Ave fish guy is good, but occasionally he's sold me frozen fish that was supposed to be fresh (I mean it was deep-frozen, not just your standard flash-frozen). He's always good about refunding my money, when it happens, but it's disconcerting.

You could also go into Chinatown. Nothing's fresher than a fish that was swimming in a tank, moments before some guy beheads it & scales it for you.
