affordable restaurant for two with wheat-free options
hey chowhounds,
i'm planning on having dinner tonight with a friend, who has has allergy to wheat glutin. does anyone have any recommendations on where we should go? it doesn't necessarily have to be an all-out alternative cuisine restaurant, just a place that has a good variety of rice, potato or corn based options.
oh, and our budget is about $15 for an entree.
thanks

My mom has celiac and eats gluten-free. When she visits we eat southeast asian food like Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, etc. My favorites are Holy Basil and Panang, which has several locations. Bali Nusa Indah near the theater district has good Indonesian.
Our other favorites are Cuban/Caribbean and South American. We especially liked Cucina Cuzco on Ave. A, which no longer exits, but uptown is Flor de Mayo and some similar places that also do the pollo a la brasa.
Stay away from Italian (most things that aren't pasta are breaded), French (flour in the sauces), and Chinese (soy sauce has wheat). If I think of any other advice I'll pass it along.

thanks a lot!
we ended up eating at boca chica and it was very good. they started us out with a complementary basket of plantain chips with black bean dip. then, my friend had the corn and stewed chicken souffle, which was served with a side of beans and rice.
it was definitely a successful meal.
by the way, thanks for the tidbit on the chinese....i never thought about the soy sauce issue. are there any brands that don't use wheat protein? my friend is a huge fan of sushi.
