Since we'll be pigging out at dinner, would love to get some recommendations on places that make great entree salads, and offer some lighter fare in various vicinities.

Create-your-own salad may be the way to go. I can only speak for the places near Grand Central, since that's where I work . . .

Cafe Metro - Lex & 45th (southwest corner) - plus they make excellent sandwiches, homemade pastas, personal pizzas, etc.

Grand Cafe - in the MetLife Bldg - 230 Park - grilled panini, hot & cold sandwiches, wraps, baked potatoes, pre-made and make-your-own salads

City Chow Cafe - in the Graybar Bldg, Equinox's entrance - aside from the salads (all make-your-own), they have turkey chili, baked potatoes, outstanding burritos, and a bunch of other foods

There's also Menchanko-Tei on 45th & Lex (about 3-4 doors east of Lex . . . don't mistake it for the other noodle shop, next door). I love their house noodle soup, but they also have lighter fare & reasonable prices.

AQ Cafe in the Scandinavia House -- the sandwiches are excellent and the platters are very light indeed.

The Tea Box in Takashimaya -- very serene and "ladies who lunch"

I totally agree about AQ Cafe. It's a cafeteria-style set-up with very pleasant atmospherics. The Scandinavian House is located on Park Av., bet. 37th & 38th Sts.

Other good options are Chez Laurence, a French cafe on Madison Av., corner 38th St.; and Branzini, a trattoria, on the corner of Madison & 41st.
