sept. food and wine has a 1/2 page article on rochelle mccune's new favorite drink on page 35. it's pretty interesting, talking about his inspiration for the new vodka, the types, what it's made from and how. if you've got a copy be sure to check it out.

I just bought bottles of Hangar One Mandarin Blossom and Kaffir Lime sale priced at $29.99 each (Hi Times in Costa Mesa, Orange County, CA). Don't know how long this special price will last, or it's available via mail-order (normal price is $36.99), but there are no limits on the amount that you can buy. I loved the Mandarin, but thought the Kaffir Lime was just okay - I prefer Charbay's Key Lime much, much more. I was surprised by the Kaffir Lime's lack of intensity, as the fresh kaffir lime fruit I've had was like 10 limes concentrated into one. If Hangar One indeed uses only the leaves, that may explain the lighter flavor and bitter overtones.

Here's my latest drink invention for this hot summer:

2 1/2 ounces Charbay Key Lime vodka
1/2 ounce Cointreau

pour into a stainless steel shaker with a generous amount of ice, shake until frost forms outside the shaker and your fingers get frostbite, strain into a martini glass and garnish with a twist of lemon (after rubbing the rim of the glass with the rind first).
