Hey Guys, I'm looking for a great Steakhouse at a great price. While I'm not opposed to paying a good amount for a good steak, I was wondering if people had any ideas about going to a place that served wonderful meat at a more reasonable price. I'm thinking of places just below the top houses (Luger's, MJoseph's, Keens... etc.), but with comparable steaks. Not even sure this is possible. A la Carte is preferable but good steak is what we're looking for. It's a celebration dinner, so atmosphere would also be appreciated.
Basically looking for incredible steak at a good price with superb service.... guys, I'm looking for a miracle.
ANY thoughts are welcome! Thanks!

If it's for a celebration, Cite's all-you-can-drink special deserves investigation. If I remember correctly, you get three courses (including steak) plus all you can drink of four wines, including a champagne. And they will all be decent bottles, nothing crappy. The steak is solid, too.

We've eaten at the Park Av. S. location of Angelo & Maxie's several times, though not recently. We thought the steaks were very good. Great chopped salad, tasty sides, and we loved the egg creams that we ordered for "dessert" (prepared tableside). Service was fine, and the cavernous space is quite attractive. The first couple of times, we didn't have a problem with the noise level; however, the last time we were there, the decibel level was so high that it was impossible to carry on a conversation around our table (8 diners) without shouting. Prices are lower than the "first tier" steak places.

Normally, I would recommend Angelo & Maxie's as well, but lately their quality has gone down significantly. The steaks are no longer as tasty and sizeable as they once were and the service had also degraded.

Steak Frites, on W. 16th off of Union Square, is very good if you go for the steak. I've tried other entrees there (the bouillabaise, some pork special) and was disappointed, but the steak seems to always be good. It's a pretty cool restaurant, too - not overbearingly loud, good service, French bistro-esque.

The atmosphere is lacking, but Florent makes a good steak too.

Believe it or not, Michael Jordan's (on the northwest balcony of Grand Central) is superb. For the size of the portions, I think the price is good.

suggestions:
Fairway Steak
Pampa on the UWS
Argentine/Uruguayan/etc.... steakhouses in Queens.

Unfortunately, most of the second tier steakhouses in Manhattan charge first tier prices.

A slightly different idea might be to go to something like Plataforma in the W50s, which is basically unlimited grilled meat on a skewer for $40 a head, which includes salad etc. Well discussed on this board.

2nd the rec for Plataforma... slightly lower price point than top tier American steakhouse but it's at the top tier of it's own cuisine type, so you're not going "2nd tier" anything. Good for celebration, I think, especially a business event. Very good wine list, too.

I also love the Cite wine dinners for a celebration (only worth it if you like wine) and agree, don't drive afterwards.

Another option is Knickerbocker on University and 9th. They are known for their excellent t-bone but their other food is good too. Cheeper than tier I and in a nice comfortible room.
