i'm thinking of joining a csa this year. would new yorkers care to comment on their experiences, positive and negative, with csa programs in the nyc area? are there particular farms which are especially recommended? for quality, variety, and value, am i better off just hitting the nyc greenmarkets as usual? thanks for your thoughts.

<content>I HIGHLY recommend Green Thumb Farm. I was a member in 2002 and absolutely loved it. High quality and delicious vegetables, also some strawberries and melons throughout the season. Interesting variety throughout, ranging from 3 different colors of string beans, fava beans and heirloom tomatoes to bitter melon, sorrel, and burdock on occasion. Always a beautiful head of lettuce in the share when available, and that was through most of the season. Everything was extremely fresh and gorgeous at the pick-up site.

During the 2003 season I joined with a Cooke Hollow Farm csa and was hugely disappointed by comparison. With Cooke Hollow, we got the same thing week after week after week, featuring mostly onions, potatoes, and cooking greens. Often the greens were already wilted and the potatoes green under the skin. I will say that many of the members of this csa are thrilled and happy, but after a season with Bill Halsey I was expecting more interesting options, and frankly better quality
