I visited very recently (from the UK) and can recommend the following (none of which required reservations but there were some small waits involved)
Republic - Union Square (very reasonably priced noodle based dishes and a cool space)
Choisi - Irving Place (Japanese) an old favourite over my last 5 or so visits to the city - nice friendly atmosphere.
Miss Mamies Spoonbread 2 (Soul food) W110th Street and Columbus
Risotteria (Risotto!) Bleeker Street and Morton (but 8 of you would probably take the place over). Really liked this place.
Soup Kitchen International (very substantial soups - take it to the park to consume) W55th between Broadway and 8th
I took some of these ideas from the Rough Guide to New York City Restaurants and the Lonely Planet guide - both useful resources.
I'm not sure what kind of food you'd be into but hope these offer some suggestions away from the usual tourist haunts.
Have fun.

It could be tough without a reservation for such a large party so first, I'd advise you to consider making a reservation if you decide there is a special place you'd like to go. If you really want to be spontaneous, I'd suggest Chinatown, which is one neighborhood where restaurants often don't take reservations. It's also interesting to walk around the neighborhood to take in the sights. There are so many good choices, but I like Great New York Noodle, Sweet n Tart, and Oriental Garden (seafood, and the most upscale of the 3 mentioned).

For lunch, I'd recommend Katz's (a truly great deli) on Houston St. in the lower east side, or perhaps share a couple of pizzas at a classic NY pizza parlor like Lombardi's, Patsy's, or Grimaldi in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn (where you'll dine across the street from a pier with one of the most beautiful views of Manhattan you'll ever see).

Have a great time!

have no clue what you have in mind, but "supper," a favorite casual italian place of mine, has a big table in the back for parties of about 6-10 i think. it could be a long wait (they do not take reservations), if you get there after 7 pm, but there is a cute bar next door to have drinks whie you wait. the restaurant has a nice ambiance, and the table sits in full view of the wine cellar (well, wine room, with glass windows).

it's on 2nd street between ave A and ave B.

If you'd like a great guinness with some wonderful albeit non irish food in a kind of upscale irish bar, go to Mr. Dennehy's on carmine street between bedford st and 7th avenue in the west village. They play fun music, and the guinness is seriously good. As is the food. Not expensive and no reservation required. Have fun.
