i just noticed on dba's website (link below) that they have storm king on tap. allowing for differences in taste, style, etc., this may be the best beer in the world. it's almost certainly the best beer being made on the east coast today (pennsylvania to be precise). it's an imperial stout, which means high alcohol content, heavy on the malt, and notes of coffee and chocolate. unlike most imperial stouts, storm king is loaded with hops, too. i can't recommend this beer strongly enough, especially to those who think beer is boring or less complicated than wine. i've only tasted it from bottles, but that's about to change...

VSK is indeed awesome stout on tap. They'll probably serve it in "snifters" rather than mugs... Ask for a snifter if d.b.a. doesn't serve it that way. You'll pick up the chocolate, cherry, and tar flavorings intensely.

Honestly, I've never had a better stout in bottle or on tap than VSK... highly recommended.

That said, I'd offer the following stouts for you to conduct a "head-to-head tasting" of VSK at DBA: North Coast Old Rasputin, Bell's Expedition, Arcadia Imperial, and Rogue XS. All imperials and any of these in the bottle (decant into drinking glass of course), will be great for side-by-side comparison to VSK. Also dry DogFish Worldwide, however at 18% alcohol it's in a league by it's own.

Also, while VSK might be "the best stout in the world", I'm voting for 3 Floyds Dreadnaught as "the best beer in the world", lol.

of the stouts you mentioned, i've tasted the rasputin, the rogue and the worldwide. the rogue xs was a severe disappointment to me: nothing in the way of carbonation, and the cloying sweetness overwhelmed any other subtleties. the rasputin was excellent, and very true to the style, unlike vsk. (then again, who cares about styles if the beer is good!) the worldwide stout was surprisingly drinkable, given its gravity, but the price means that it's more of a special occasion beer. i'll take vsk over all of them.

also recommended from victory: the hop devil ipa, old horizontal barleywine (as you mentioned) and the V12. i wasn't too fond of golden monkey either, but all in all, victory is really turning out some high-quality brews.

one final note -- all of these beers are available (in bottles, of course) at the new beer wholesale market on chrystie street, except the dreadnaught from three floyds. where did you find that?

I've never had Dreadnaught in New York. Check with the 3 Floyd's wholesaler and they can tell you what retail outlets carry it. In Chicago it's avail in 22 oz bottles at Sams and Binny's on the shelf but they don't list it on their websites.

Last year it was also on tap at Sheffields... what a beer.
