I put up a post yesterday looking for any feedback on The Loreley (Beirgarten in the LES) - and got 2 interesting and somewhat connected responses...

so I thought I'd throw a post alerting beer-hounds to the event they have this Friday (that AlwaysHungry tipped me to), the other person who replied to my post on The Lorely said it looked like they had a good beer selection and knowledgeable bartender... their beer tasting sounds like a GREAT deal (I can't make it so I'm hoping someone goes and gives me the scoop ;-)

I'm sorry to say that this place really doesn't have that great a beer selection. The beers on tap are not very rare or hard to find and not even near the best for German brews available in NYC. Just my opinion but I say don't waste your time but go to dba or Gingerman, or Blind Tiger or Mugs or Spuyten Duyvil or any of the other great places in manhattan or Brooklyn.

While I'd agree that the beer list isn't OVERALL that rare, there sure is enough to rate $15 bucks pretty easy, IMHO.

1) You're going to get a good sampling of 5 categories of German beer. and there's enough decent if not very good wines in each category to more than represent the category

2) The following are very good or great beers: Schneider's wheat & especially the aventinus Eisbock...Salvatore is a great bock.

$15 bucks for 20 beers in 5 categories...take it...and there's "German snacks"...come hungry.

There's a better beer tasting event, tonight at 6pm at the Blind Tiger, featuring rare Heavyweight brews (a microbrewery from NJ) and free cheeses. Click the link below for more info.

I can't make it myself so I'm tryin' to spread the love.

From ratebeer.com, the most highly rated Heavyweight brews are, in order:

Perkunos Imperial Porter (which I notice they promise to have a 1.5 year old keg of!!)
Biere D'Art, Cinderblock Lager, and Old Salty (a medium-rated barleywine).

Don't miss that Porter!!! and please report back. It would be GREAT if someone could taste the Porter side-by-side some other great porters like Fuller's and Anchor.

Still, all-in-all, the German beer tasting event still looks like a good experience at $15 as well. There you taste a very respectable range of 5 different types of German beers.
