do you know this for sure and do you know when?

It was reported in the NY Times.

Good riddance. Overpriced and bad attitude.

With all respect to WP and other restaurants, I thought WP was significantly overrated and it received my patronage only once (when I tried the highly touted, but mediocre, roast chicken).
While I would not wish closure upon any restaurant, if this fate had to befall some restaurants, it is better that it is those with weaker cuisines that are affected. :)

Agreed - too much attitude and the food wasn't special enough. For Cabrales and others: Have there been (upscale) restaurants in NY that have closed in the last year or so that you thought did not deserve this fate based on the quality of their food? (with apologies for awkward wording...)

Lespinasse comes to mind.

Yes, Lespinasse was a very unfortunate, although an earlier closing, Cello, was affirmatively saddening to me because I liked the cuisine of Cello very much :0

anyone so happy to see the demise of wp must never have tried their rhubarb charlotte - truly one of the finest in season deserts I've ever had the pleasure of eating -- and there was always an ample selection of great $20 bottles of red - but the service lacked in many ways, waiters always did "guide" in that oh so rude manner

I went there with my wife last April and we had a very nice dinner. Pleasant service too. The wellfleet oysters, although more of nature's creation than anything, were amazing. I had a salty but not overpowering salty, salmon dish that was fine. My wife had the chicken, though not blown away, found it to be very good. Was it overrated? Perhaps. I think another trip to WP would help me make a better decision.

Went there a few weeks ago. Had a good (not outstanding) dinner. Ordered a special wine (I'm a wine geek) and the price at the end was astronomical. The sommelier had recommended a wine about 1/3 higher than price range of other wines I had been discussing with him and then said "I'll take some off because I know its higher." In the end they took off 10% which was way low. I mentioned something to him and he said "I took some off. Want me to take more off?" I felt cheap to say yes, so just (my fault, I know) said "No, its fine."

To respond to the poster a few lines above, I know I'm in the minority, but I thought Pazo was a relatively upscale, good restaurant that didn't deserve its fate. And the previous tenant in that space, Sono, certainly didn't (of course, if Sono hadn't closed, we wouldn't have Matsuri).
Sushi Haitsu closed due to a rent increase and the chef's desire to go back to Japan, but Sushi Seki, which opened in its place, is probably as good or better.
My own view on WP is the same as most. Went there once, thought it was ok, nothing special, but not deserving of all the Chowhound vitriol, either. Then again, in the 18 months since, it never even crossed my mind to go back. I'm apparently not alone, which probably says a lot about why it's closing.

I miss Verbena, whose closing was due to a dispute with the landlord. The food was always good, and I particularly enjoyed dining in the lovely back garden during the warm weather months. Here's hoping that Diane Forley and Michael Otsuka return to the NYC restaurant scene very soon.

I'd have to say I don't miss Verbena.
