Moishes bakery on Houston a few doors East of Russ & Daughters used to have very good (chewy enough to make your jaw ache) bagels. I think the one on Houston is gone, but I think their other store on Second Avenue around 3rd or 4th street is still there...

In an online directory I found a listing for them: Moishes
Homemade Kosher Bakery, 212-475-9624, 181 E Houston St.

believe it or not, yonah schimmel of knish fame makes GREAT bagels. maybe the best in the city. denser and less sweet than h&h but a chewier, crispier crust and more flavorful than kossars.

I've tried them all. Please realize that, in my world, the only proper amount of sugar in a bagel is zero. H&H doesn't make bagels. They make mushy sweet rolls.

Take a deep breath and make the trek to the Kosher
Bagel Hole on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue J in Brooklyn. Vaut le voyage.
