I think you have to forget about Russ & Daughters this trip. I stopped in a couple of years ago because I was in the area. There was a three hour wait, and if you leave and they call your number, they won't serve you. This year I ordered for pick-up on Saturday, and I tried to add something yesterday. They could'nt do it. Also, minimum on any item is one pound. Kossar's may be as busy. When you get back to NY, these are must tries.

I usually go to R&D early in the morning, but I have never encountered more than a 15 minute wait. Certainly there was no pound minimum on any fish I purchased.

That is generally my experience, but what I'm guessing the poster is talking about is the Yom Kippur Break Fast rush.

Normal, everyday, R&D is quite manageable, friendly, and accomodating.

You are probably right. But it is important to point this out, since otherwise people might be put off from shopping there on ordinary days. Thanks for the clarification.

I was confused too! I've seen people buy tiny pieces of fish there.

Yom Kippor starts this Sunday at sunset and the 'break-the-fast' meal (Monday night) is a meal of fish...lox, herring, chopped herring, etc. People will be placing (mostly likely too late now) and picking up huge orders all weekend. I am certain that Russ & Doughters is already pushed to their limit.

Want to visit the store...go next week.

I just called Russ & Daughters. They're no longer taking phone or web orders for this weekend, but will be filling walk-in (i.e., retail) orders on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. They said to expect a wait.
