I believe Chanterelle is not what it was a number of years ago. I used to like Chanterelle much more than I do now. However, it still have a decent $38 three-course (limited selection; menu varies from period to period) lunch that applies to Saturday as well as weekdays. I take advantage of the Saturday availability from time to time.

Chanterelle's attractive enough that I am considering attending a Louis Jadot dinner there in which the director of the chateaux will participate (some wines are village/Beaujolais, but Corton Charlemagne, Chevalier Montrachet and Echezeux are also included) on October 21.

I have been reading many posts about Chanterelle for many months and I greatly disagree with the negative reviews written it.
I have been going here almost from the start on Greene Street and I find the food as good and as fresh as ever.
Furthermore, the sommelier, Roger Dagorn is probably one of the nicest and most knowledgable in NYC.
The trend here seems to be to knock this restaurant but I feel it still is one of the finest in the city.

We went to Chanterelle for lunch a few months ago. I though it was terrible. My husband had the bass special which was tastless and I had breast of duck which was so tough that I only had two bites and did not finish. The desserts were okay, nothing special. I don't understand how this restaurant gets any rave reviews. It was one of the worst restaurants I have ever gone to in New York City. Sometimes it is very hard to trust the Zagat survey and also my fellow chowhounds who "raved" about this restaurant! Lunch was very expensive and not worth a penny. I can make dishes 100 times better than this restaurant. A MAJOR disappointment.

i too had a very disappointing meal there. the sommelier was very polite and knowledgeable (although the wine he recommended did not quite hit the note with us. he offered to replace it but we stuck with it as an experiment to expand our wine-taste horizons). it was the extra cheese course we ordered that saved the evening from complete disappointment. now, if i could go to chanterelle and spend $17.50 on cheese, i'd do it. over $80 per person BEFORE the cheese and without wine? no way. food too boring. recent review in NY Observer only rated it at 2 stars. i agree, it's no longer a 3-star restaurant.
