Hello! I was wondering if anyone could direct me to any good bakeries for cakes and desserts in the Lower East Side? I can't think of any off the top of my head but I need to pick up something and wondering if anyone has suggestions. Rich, sumptuous, and chocolatey all fit the bill and all responses are welcome. Thank you!

There's something called Clinton St. Bakery on Clinton just south of Houston. Never been in it.

There's a bakery on the SW corner of 11st St. and etiehr 1st or 2nd ave that's pretty tasty, but nothing close to Black Hound.

I am pretty underwhelmed by Veniros, unless you want lots of those icky tasting Italian cookies that my wife for some reason likes...

yes yes yes. Haven't tried too many other items at Veniero's (most don't look too appealling to me), but I absolutely love their sfogliatelle. To be fair, I've only tried sfogliatelle at a handful of places, but it's far and away the best I've tried (miles better than Roccos' sfogliatelle).

You want Sfogliatelle, leave Veniero to the tourists.
Cross 1st Av to whatchamacallits, that Italian bakery, two steps down to a tile aisle between heavenly glass cases of pasteries.
Damnit, I forget its name.
The shop's been in movies, too.
Not Strombolli's. That's the best pizza pie.
What's its name?
It's on the tip of my tongue.

What's the name of the Italian bakery opposite Veniero's?

Opposite, on 1st Ave, between 11th & 12th.
Opposite, as in less-well known, un-touristed.
Opposite, not over-rated, nor under-whelming.

Please! Help me. I forgot its name and am going crazy, finding nothing but Web chatter about Veniero's.
Thanks.

They aren't all chocolate-y, but as long as we're talking about the East Village too, we obviously need to mention Momofuku Milk Bar's cookies. My favorite dessert, however, are the poppyseed hamentaschen at Moishe's. For chocolates, Russ and Daughters has a surprisingly wonderful and decadent selection - the dark chocolate-covered orange peels are my favorite there.
