2 months back when i moved here people suggested to me a variety of choices about 7$ meals. here are my findings of cheap/medium priced food in the east village.

The purpose of this is to identify cheap places where people like me can take food home after a busy day at work

please add to it. lets enjoy the village fully.

1. bereket on houston not bad at all turkish pizza is like a taco for 2.50 need to to fill up

2. new saigon vietnamese 1 ave 4th st place strongly recommended
try their chicken salad for 4$ and chicken corn soup for 1.60 (why bother opening a campbell tin)

3. punjabi deli 1st st between 1 and ave a 2$ rice and curry bowl or 4$ bigger bowl

4 rays pizza 5$ meat lasagna with bread its huge
take it home

5 popeyes cheap deep fried chicken new orleans style
fast food chain 1 ave and 12th st

6 japanese place win 49 on allen st 7$ bento box try the curry bento. has boxes of food as sample to show you what u get

7 subway on 1st between a and b ave has a second sub for 99 cents and u buy a large drink

8 all chinese takeouts i went to are the same (bad to very bad quality but really cheap. if you want cheap food then chinese is your choice can get 1/2 freind chicken and rice for 4$ i prefer popeyes fried on the rare ocassions that i eat fried food

At Three of Cups on 1st ave at 5th st (?) they have an order one pizza (individual size) get the second free if you order before 7:30 (this might be just if you eat at the bar, I'm not sure). The pizzas are around $7-8 so it's a great deal, although their pizza can't touch Lil' Frankies down the street.

to this list i would add:

Zaragoza Mexican Grocery (Ave A btwn 13/14) - rotating selection of tacos, tamales, sopes, quesadillas, etc. tacos and tamales are $2, other items may be a little more expensive, but $7 will definitely fill you up. no real seating.

Cafe Rakka (St. Mark's btwn 1st/2nd) - best falafel stand in the EV, in my opinion, offering all the usual items for the usual cheap prices.

Sal's Pizzeria (Ave A btwn 6/7) - standard slice joint offering better than average slices, plus the usual sandwiches and entrees. try the focaccia slice with cheese (this is not at all what it sounds like.)

Blue 9 Burger (3rd ave btwn 12/13) - somewhat reminiscent of In-n-Out Burger, for those who have spent time on the west coast. blue 9 burger with fries and a soda is about $7, i think.

Caracas Arepa Bar (7th st. btwn 1st/A) - just what it sounds like. arepas run $3 to $4 each, and 2 should do the trick. don't skimp on the hot sauce.

Clinton Restaurant (Clinton at Houston) - i haven't tried the entrees, but the Cuban sandwich ($4) is phenomenal (and filling).

of course, i'm sure there are plenty of others...

Mama's Food Shop, 3rd btw. Aves. A/B - Inexpensive, tasty comfort food, mostly for takeout.

Stepmama's, 3rd btw. Aves. A/B (across from Mama's) - Sandwiches and salads from the people who run Mama's.

Habib's Place, St. Mark's btw. Aves. 1st/A - Middle Eastern. Good couscous and tagines.

Daphne's Caribbean Express, 14th St. btw. 2nd/3rd Aves. - Very good Caribbean food like oxtail stew, chicken fricassee. Comes off a steam table but delicious nonetheless. Great for takeout.

Elvie's Turo-Turo, 1st Ave. btw. 12/13 - Filipino equivalent of Daphne's.

National Cafe, 1st Ave. btw. 12/13 (few doors down from Elvie's) - Tiny Cuban place with great stewed meats, soups, and plantains in many forms. Super for takeout or delivery.

Crif Dogs, St. Mark's btw. 1st/A - Wide range of hot dogs and wider range of toppings.

Dawgs on Park, 7th btw. A/B - Ditto.

Kai Kai, Ave. A btw. 9th/St. Mark's - Decent Thai food, very cheap. Comes off a steam table.

The list goes on. The East Village is jammed with good and inexpensive takeout places (though not many offer particularly healthful choices).

An aside: Your original list included a couple of chain restaurants. Cheap and convenient though these may be, I encourage you to patronize local restaurants instead of chains. Buying from locally-owned shops keeps your dollars in the city, whereas chains send your profits back to corporate HQ or into the pockets of nonresident shareholders. I think this is bad.

Not a lot of good cheap mex in Manhattan, but this item at this place works.

Have had some success with other items as well.

Actually I think it's on 1st Ave between 2nd and 3rd, just a few shops up from dba's. I have enjoyed everything I've ever had at this place over the past 6-7 years. My personal favv is their beef enchiladas mole poblano with rice and beans. And get both their homemade red and green sauces on the side, great flavors and a good spicy kick. About $7 and it's more than a meal and very, very, very tasty. Also when you order the guacamole they hand fry tortilla chips and make guacamole fresh per each order.

Actually, there are two locations: one closer to DBA and another further uptown. The one closer to DBA has great mole as you mention. By the looks of it I'd say both are owned by the same folks. The other one has a really good steak torta and has agua de horchata to wash it down.

had to throw this one when I saw your alias... the Madras Cafe on Second Ave and 5th St has very good food and excellent/delicious dosas. The masala dosa ($6.95) comes with coconut chutney on the side and is HUGE.

also a great old-school EV bargain is a big bowl of soup and challa bread from B & H dairy on Second Ave and 7th for $3!

also at the polish restaurant - Christine's (a good polish place in the neighborhood) - on 1st and 13th just about every entree (many chicken dishes, stuffed cabbage and peppers, roast pork, beef goulash) is between $6-7 and comes with 2 side dishes (we always get 2 meals out of 1 order making it an even cheaper meal) - we prefer Teresa's down the street - but Christine's wins on the bargain angle.

and be sure to check out the Flor's post above
