Perbacco (234 E 4th St.) has very good food and the pasta dishes are around $10. You can check their menu at menupages.com

I would say ANY of the E.V. Italians are your best bet though Perbacco's been getting a lot of play on the boards of late (check menupages for East Village/LES Italian - there are TONS)...

Il Bagatto is cheap and yummy and a fun atmosphere (not very quiet, if that's what you're looking for)...

Pastas are cheap and filling (gnocci), split an app (grilled squid), splurge on a couple glasses of house red. And if you really want to shoot the moon, retire to their wine bar after dinner for a quieter cheese plate and a few more (nicer) glasses of wine. But that might be overkill....

Have a great date...

Any except Tappo, which is inexplicably very expensive, and I Coppi... :) Also, Il Covo Dell'Est is great, but not cheap.

A couple other suggestions: aKa Cafe on the LES -- very casual, but good and cheap. Tsampa, an unusual Tibetan place, might score you inventive points. The food's not fantastic, but it's a good deal.

Try 'inoteca on Rivington. It's more of a grazing menu of excellent Italian goodies, and almost everything is under $10.

Just tried 'inoteca last weekend. Outstanding. I'll save the details for another post. Nearly everything is under $10, but it's easy to run up quite a tab if you drink and order multiple courses - which is extremely difficult not to do there (at least for me).

I'd strongly recommend Ivo and Lulu on Broome near Varick. It's a tiny candlelit BYOB place where apps are $6-8 and all the entrees are $10. Considering you can bring your own bottle of wine, it's quite a bargain. The food is "French Carribean" and quite tasty if you don't mind a lot of spice, which I certainly don't. I'd recommend the duck confit and grilled pear appetizer! Yum!
