Orwasher's on 78th St. betw. 1st and 2nd Aves is good for breads such as rye, pumpernickel and cinnamon raisin. Amy's bread, with locations in Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen and on the upper east side, is good for baguettes and boules and has great specialty breads like semolina fennel raisin and potato onion dill.

The best sourdough rye bread is sold by Tribeca Oven. They sell at the greenmarket on Friday mornings at 97th and Amsterdam.
