I will be visiting New York, and I need a cafe or coffee house with honest atmosphere and something good to eat where I can spread out some paperwork and not worry about being hurried out to make way for the next customer. Anywhere in Manhattan would be equally fine. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Well, I'm not sure if it's honest (it is a little pretentious, but I like that), but Doma on 7th Ave. and Perry will fit the bill. It's a nice, homey place with good food and ok coffee. It is a little expensive, but it seems like everyone there sits for hours working on their laptops and sipping coffee. The best place to work in Manhattan I've been to, other than an office.

I stopped going for awhile because the coffee is toxic but I dropped in recently and saw all sorts of new rules governing laptop users and how long they can stay. They have new hours though and are open to midnight which is really handy. I only wish the coffee was BYOB.

BYOC, right?
Doma (17 Perry St @7th Ave)has a nice vibe, but the food is only so-so. Don't they taste those sandwich combinations after they think them up? They do have a two-hour table limit, I believe.
71 Irving (Irving Place between 18th & 19th) is my usual spot for studying, coffee's decent, and I believe they get their baked goods from Clinton Street Bakery, which is a good thing.

columbus bakery might be a good choice, on columbus/83rd. it's "self-serve" and they have plenty of tables, indoor and out. they serve all day: breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus your standard coffees and teas...

71 Irving Place usually works for me. It's counter service, they let you sit as long as you want, but it can get quite busy and (thus) a bit noisy.

Cafe Mozart on 70th between CPW and Broadway is a good spot. They have internet access during the day as well as outdoor seating. They also have very good french pressed coffees.

Very laid back atmosphere until it gets crowded in the evenings for their music/dessert.
