A Chowhound Challenge:

I am looking for an interesting place for a pre-theater dinner with the folks in Midtown. This geographical area is certainly not one of my strong points, so any fascinating suggestions would be appreciated. A pre-theater special would be an added plus if it doesn't compromise the food. Thanks

My parents (ex-New Yorkers now in their 70s) have enjoyed both Uncle Vanya Cafe (315 W 54th betw. 8 & 9 Aves.) and Becco (355 W 46). The former for pretty authentic Russian chow, the latter for good pasta from the folks who brought you Felidia. Neither will break the bank, either.

Usually when I go to the theater, I like to go to Hells Kitchen because the food is good and you won't have to pay theater area prices. I like Julian's which has a large menu with a good variety. The restaurant is also nice. It is located on 53 or 54th on 9th avenue.
