Can anyone recommend any places with good, authentic Maryland-style crab cakes? The big meaty kind you can get in Baltimore? Read a review for Fish in the Village a few weeks back, the reviewer claimed the crab cakes were pretty close to authentic, but when I tried them recently, I was disappointed -- they were like salty hockey pucks.

I've already given up on the idea of find a place that serves a giant, heaping plate of streamed crabs that you crack open with a mallet, so crabcakes are the next best thing to me. Thanks!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of eating at Brasserie 8 1/2, where we had the crab cakes as one of our lunches. They were fabulous. I spend a lot of time in Delmarva and had all but given up on ever ordering crab cakes, (or crabs) in New York again. They were the real deal.

I also had good ones at their sister restaurant, Tropica. Very meaty and well seasoned. I think they were served with a chipotle cream.

i just came back from lunch at ben benson's and although i didn't try them, one of the people with whom i dined ordered them and they had the largest pieces of crabmeat in them that i've seen anywhere (i know that wasn't grammatically correct). not sure if this makes them better than ones that have basically shredded crabmeat in them but it might.

I grew up in Baltimore and have stopped ordering crab cakes in NY after years of constant disapointment. Surprisingly, the best crab cakes I've had in the city were at Houston's in the Citicorp building. It's been a couple of years but they were the real deal. I've never been able to bring myself back there in case (as is likely) they did not live up to my memory.

Yup, that's pretty much what I thought. Don't understand why that is since seafood is readily available here and let's face it, Baltimore ain't THAT far away. Perhaps I'll comb gourmet food stores and see what they have, and if all else fails, I'll take matters into my own hands and make 'em myself!

Thanks for the feedback, y'all.

I'm also from that area, and grew up on a steady diet of spectacular crab cakes! Like everyone else, I've yet to have a truly spectacular one here, though I've *heard* that the Sea Grill in Rockefeller Center serves what's supposed to be a great one. Can't confirm though. Anyone?

1 lbs. jumbo crabmeat, 1 egg, 1 cup saltines, 1/2 cup mayo, 1 tablespoon dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon worcestershire, dash of tabasco. Saute in pan with butter or fry in oil and voila! Serve with tartar sauce.

Not that complicated, I don't understand why it's so hard to find here.
