Gluten-Free in NYC

My husband and I enjoy taking our 2 toddlers to family-friendly restaurants. However, our youngest son has Celiac Disease and is on a very strict diet. Someone, told me that she saw a restaurant in the Village that had a sign that stated it is a Gluten-Free Restaurant; but she didn't remember where exactly it was or the name of the restaurant.

Does anyone know of any gluten-free restaurants in NYC (outer boroughs, LI and Westchester are good for us too)? I appreciate any info you have.

Gus's Place, on Bleecker Street east of 6th Ave (a block SE of Rissotoria) is pretty good and has a GF Menu, as do the various Outback Steakhouses.

Check out the Gluten Free Restaurant Awareness Program places.

French Roast, at 85th & Broadway is quite good. They don't have a GF menu as such, but the staff (one of whom is celiac) are at least gluten aware and will check all dishes for this and most allergies.

Risotteria has great GF pizza and desserts (as well as frozen things like cookie dough that you can purchase if you like their stuff). But another terrific option is Caracas Arepa Bar on 7th St and 1st Ave. They serve arepas (crunchy chewy corn "pita" type things) stuffed with various meat, cheese, veggies etc. This is a naturally occuring gluten free item, not a gluten free version of something else. They are delicious and amazing and inexpensive and I very highly recommend it!

Risotteria is a big gluten-free place in the village--obviously most dishes are made with rice, but they also have amazing gluten free breadsticks. It's pretty popular, regardless of your diet preferences/restrictions.

don't undersell risotteria--most gf people go there for their pizza, panini, breaksticks, and desserts--not the rice dishes (which you can have GF in lots of places!)

first off i want to say that cafe baldo is not good in my opinion. i just went there a few weeks ago and yes the owner was helpful, but the food itself was very mediocre. there is a very good restuarant in nyc though that i have been to many times. the name is rissotoria and its located on bleeker street. the phone number is (212) 924-6664. they have gluten and non-gluten foods, such as, pizza, panani sandwiches, and risoto. they also have a few different gluten free beers and yummy gf breadsticks for the table. it is moderatley priced also. i def. recommend it!

I have been gluten-free for 30 years. Although I avoid pizza & pasta restaurants, with a little bit of caution and information you can eat almost everywhere. For example, sushi restaurants are fine, but you must avoid soy sauce (which contains wheat). Just bring your own gluten-free soy sauce for dipping. You can get sauteed or grilled fish or roast chicken in innumerable restaurants. You only need to ask the server if the food is prepared with any bread crumbs or flour for dredging. If they don't know, ask them to check with the chef. Cooked vegetables are almost always gluten free, as are rice dishes and potatoes. So a restaurant doesn't have to be gluten-free for your son to eat gluten-free. Just ask some questions and realize that you won't be able to order everything on the menu.

In my experience, Josies (on a'dam ave - upper wside and in murray hill) is patient when dealing with people with gluten intolerance and food allergies.

They have some gluten free items on their regular menu as well as some gluten free specials.

While not in NYC, out on Long Island there is a restaurant called "Cafe Baldo" in Wantagh that has gluten free dishes (i.e., pizzas, pastas, garlic knots, mozzarella sticks, cakes, cookies, etc.) that are the closest to the real thing that I've ever had. The owner/waitress is a celiac, so she takes this seriously, as she cooks everything fresh herself.

My sister is a celiac diagnosed very late in life, and that place keeps her sane. Most other places I've tried with her just offer rice dishes or something, but they don't satisfy her cravings for pizza, pasta, or just plain old buttered bread. Non-celiacs generally find most of the food palatable (which, if you've ever tried gluten-free attempts at pizza/pasta/cookies, I thought was impossible), and they sell fresh stuff to go. They also have regular food, the portions of which are huge. The gluten-free dishes tend to be expensive (the pizza was $22!), but it's supply and demand... the only gluten-free restaurant that serves good food.

If anyone knows of others (especially in NYC), please post them!

This website lists 2 gluten-free restaurants in the Village (sorry, I don't know anything about either one). Good luck!
