<content>Did you notice that on each plate there were only 2 pieces of whatever she was having instead of the typical 3 or 4 on a regular dim sum plate. If they can do that - give you fewer pieces and lower the price accordingly, that's awesome. You can then have a bigger variety and still stay in budget.

      <content>Of course I noticed.

I've been eating dim sum since before I could walk. I've been making it since before I could write. We sold it since before I was in school.

What I would like to know is does Oriental Pearl do a plate of only 2 pieces of specialty dim sim for less than 2 bucks a plate for anyone? If they do, then I'm there because I've never even heard of such a thing.

I have nothing - really - against Rachel.

And yes, I saw your photos. Very cute.</content>

<content>The Chinese characters for "four" and "death" are nothing alike. And I don't know about all Chinese dialects but in Cantonese it's "say", Mandarin it's like "szz" and Shanghainese "sssz".

Confused?

And to go back to the original dim sum related question, the number 4 has nothing to do with any of it as you'll often find 4 dumplings in an order.</content>

<content>A few weeks ago there was a big discussion on the General Board about Rachel Ray's $40 a day show.

I wished I had caught the episod last night, would have been interesting to see our own city. Although, it's not hard to spend less than $40 if you stick with ethinic food. Heck, I can buy goceries for the entire week with $20 at Chinatown.</content>

<content>"Rachael is on a low-cost mission to enjoy one of America's most exciting culinary cities. Her first stop is Chinatown. Next, she's to Swan Oyster Depot. Rachael goes to Citizen Cake, and finishes off the day at Le Metro."

According to the FoodTV website it's reshowing Sunday at 1:30.

There was a lot of carping about this show on the General Topics board a couple of weeks ago, but I enjoyed the Vancouver episode I saw (reshowing Friday at noon). Yeah, she's excessively perky and has some annoying mannerisms, but unlike the "Best of" hosts she actually seems to enjoy the food. I like the way she takes a few moments to actually experience the dish she's eating and the way she describes it in more detail than just saying "it's good."

Plus I thought she did a damn good job at trying hand-pulled noodles. She obviously knows what she's doing in the kitchen. </content>

<content>Le Metro? Where is that? Not a big fan of Rachel or the bogus $40 a day theme of her new show, but I will TIVO that episode to check it out.

I'm really hoping its not Metro on Divisdero. Let the Food TV masses go to Clementine and Chapeau! Metro is for its neighbors and people that can appreciate its charms. </content>

      <content>Oh man, me too!
I certainly hope that she isn't planning on going there, even though it is the perfect place if your on a budget. Rob and i have een going there since they reoponed with the pears, and it is certainly hit or miss, but more often than not it is a hit. I have only had 2 sub par meals there out of 20. so that is good odds for me...
although the last one i had that was bad was only last week, but rob's food was still excellent, so ichalked it up to having ordered the wrong thing.
oh well...
on the Racheal Ray note: i think she is awful and i would love to see how she manages to only blow 40 bucks in this town in a day without eating tacos...
actually, i don't really care, i think that we probably all know how to do that ourselves already, right?</content>

      <content>in downtown SF.

Did you notice she didn't include taxes and tips at Metro Cafe to stay at $40. Wow! I live in SF for 15 years and I didn't know we don't pay taxes or leave tips at restaurants.

How about drink? Even the chef had to give her a complimentary glass of chardonnay. Another Wow! If I don't pay taxes, leave tips, and get free drinks, I think I can do San Francisco for $10 a day.

<content>I can understand the rationale in not counting tax (which is different in different cities) and tip (which is discretionary, and besides, you wouldn't want to be tempted to stiff someone to stay under budget).

But still, in SF 8 percent tax plus 15 percent tip adds an extra 23 percent to the bill, making it more like $50 than $40.

You don't have to eat tacos to eat well in this City for $40 a day, though. Just look at the cheap eats thread below.</content>
